Phillimore's Marriages - Wymeswold 1560 to 1837

Volume I consists of five parts, detached from each other, but placed long ago in a parchment cover, though not bound to it. It extends from 1560 to 1755, all written on parchment leaves, measuring 12 inches by about 8 inches. Peter Rathbone, vicar, who in 1598 copied afresh the entries of the first thirty-eight years, used the Latin language almost till his death (July, 1619) ; but only one of his successors made any attempt to perpetuate Latin, viz., John Orme, from 1687 to 1700, after having contented himself with English during his earlier years. In 1687 he married a wife, a lady belonging to a family of position; and it is possible that the lady thought Latin more stylish, and emboldened her husband to restore it.

Part the first consists of 34 leaves stitched together. It embraces the incumbencies of six vicars, Woodcocke, Thorpe, Gibson, Rathbone, Fisher, and Chamberlain (1560-1637).

Part the second consists of 22 leaves, ending with a burial on the 25th March, 1664/5. Richard Palmer was vicar until 1646, after which date the Register was confided to Parliamentary custodians. At the Restoration the existing “Vicar” (Hathaway) conformed, and held the office of vicar till 1680 but it does not appear who made the entries which conclude Part the second, or those which begin Part the third in 1665. The Register passed in 1681 into the hands of a new vicar, John Orme, whose burial is recorded (almost illegibly) December, 1700, on the very last page. This third part consists of 21 leaves.

Part the fourth (15 leaves) is begun by a new vicar, Edward Moises, who in the middle of his incumbency accepted the vicarage of Wysall (Notts), thereby formally vacating Wymeswold, to which, however, he was again presented. One leaf (the fifth) has no entries upon it, probably owing to its unusually thin texture In 1728 Mr. Moises was made rector of Keyworth (Notts), and now resigned Wymeswold for good.

Part the fifth (18 leaves) has the induction of the new vicar, Thomas Green, recorded on the opening fly-leaf. This Part extends from 1728 to 1755. Over the year 1752 Mr. Green briefly calls attention to the introduction of the “New Stile.” Finding his parishioners somewhat troubled about this change of reckoning, and about the “loss” of eleven days which took place at the same time, he published a pamphlet in which he tried to meet the objections which they naturally felt.

Volume II measures 14 inches by 10 inches ; consists of 33 parchment leaves, bound in a parchment cover. It contains the marriages of 1754 to 1812, but the entries are not orignals. The originals were found in 1824 to be perished with damp, and the churchwardens had them all copied afresh into this Volume II. In binding the volume, the years 1776 to 1812 are somewhat oddly made to precede the years 1754 to 1776. At the back of leaf 26 the burial of Thomas Wightman, curate, is recorded under date December 30th, 1812, with a warm testimony to his worth, written probably by the Rev. John Ayre, a proprietor residing for many years in Wymeswold. Then follow seven leaves upon which are entered (but upside down) the baptisms and burials of seven years (1806 to 1812), all except the last being signed by Mr. Wightman. They were entered here because Volume III, to which they properly belonged, was full.

Volume III consists of 36 parchment leaves, the last two being smaller than the rest which measure 12 inches by 8 inches, like those of Volume I. It is bound in parchment covers. It contains baptisms and burials from 1756 to 1806, those of the next seven years being entered (as above noted) at the end of Volume II. On the death of Thomas Green in 1776 after a vicariate of 48 years, during the latter part of which he resided at Walton Rectory, the vicars were non-resident for several years, and curates discharged the duties. There are no entries in 1791, and very few in the two previous year. The Rev. Jos. Dawson was curate for eighteen years (1773-1793), and the Rev. Thos. Wightman for nineteen years (1793—1812).

Volume IV contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.

These Marriages have been abstracted for the present work, and the above descriptive collation of the original Registers made, by the Rev. R. C. Green, the present Vicar of Wymeswold, under whose supervision they are now printed.

Mr. Palmer’s induction as Vicar took place Dec. 1638. In 1647 he was ejected, and retired apparently to Burton-on-the-Wolds. He was buried at Prestwotd 1 Oct., 1651]

[On the expulsion of the Vicar, Richard Palmer, during the year 1647, the Register soon becomes confused; Births are recorded instead of Baptisms though not always; Marriages disappear for a time. In Dec., 1653, James Brecknocke, “Vicar” of Wimswold, is elected “Register” by the parishioners and sworn in before Justice Danvers. Births and Baptisms, one or both, are now recorded; and in January a Marriage.]

[This concludes Part the third of Vol. I.; the Churchwardens attest the entries, “there being no Vicar,” Mr. Orme having died in December, and his successor, Mr. Moises, being not yet instituted. Judge William Leeke, who married Katherine Bainbrigge, of Lockington, in 1670, was a man of note in Wymeswold, and the last male representative of the family of Leekes who had lived here for several generations. A costly monument in the Church records his history and character. He left only a daughter Katharine, who married into the Okeover family Jan. 8th, 1699. Judge Leeke died 1687, aged 57. Mr. Orme had married a wife out of the same Bainbrigge family, named An. Their son, Bainbrigge Orme, was born 12th Sept., 1700, and baptised 16th Oct., a few months before Mr. Orme’s death]
