Knighton was formerly in the parish of St. Margaret, Leicester, but it was made a separate parish many years ago.
An earlier volume or volumes, as shown by the Bishop’s transcripts (see below), is lost.
Volume I. had no covers and was in a dirty, dog’s-eared state, but has now been properly restored and beautifully re-bound. It contains 16 parchment leaves measuring about 12 by 8½ inches. Some earlier leaves may very likely have been lost; there is no heading. The contents are most unsatisfactory, as the Register was carelessly kept, the entries being made without regard to datal sequence, so that it is impossible to unravel them; a searcher must go through them all, which does not take long. About a quarter at the top of leaf six is gone, probably carrying entries; three whole leaves and parts of several others are blank; several pages contain only one or two entries; almost all the writing is illiterate and there must surely have been serious omissions.
There are registered here Baptisms from 1654 to 1693 and two entries in 1701-2 on page 1. Burials 1655 to 1692, and two entries in 1701. Marriages 1672-85.
The first entry is :— “John Bennit the sonne of Henry Bennit & Alice his wyfe was borne the xxvth of September in the yeare abovesaid,” 1654.
Volume II “Registrum Ecciesial de Knighton intra Parochiam Stae Margaretae apud Leicestriam continuatu et perfecte rescriptum (quoad fieri potuit) juxta priorem Copiam,per Johan: Kilbye Vic:”
Comparison shows discrepancies, however. It contains 11 stout parchment leaves, 11¾ by 8 inches, in stout parchment boards in good condition. The last page is blank. This volume (and Volume III.) are in great contrast to the second, being excellently kept, neatly written and very legible throughout. It records Baptisms and Marriages, 1695-1722, Burials 1696-1722.
Volume III.—22 stout parchment leaves (in parchment boards) nearly 12 by 9½ inches. All is orderly until 1752-63, when datal sequence is broken and there were probably omissions. Baptisms for 1754 and various years to 1765 are mixed; then Baptisms and Births in various years 1754-63, and Burials 1763, after which orderly sequence is resumed.
This book records Baptisms and Births and Burials 1723-78. Marriages 1723-48, none registered in 1749-54. On the last leaf, inverted, are four Baptisms in 1751-59.
Shut in this book, loose, are six parchment and five paper (some double) leaves, containing the original entries made by (?) the parish clerk and afterwards copied into the Register.
Volume IV.—Marriages, 1755 to 1809, printed forms, parchment leaves in calf binding; in good order. Owing to no pounce being used, poor ink and worse writing, many entries are very faint and difficult to read.
