When the Parliamentary Return of 1831 was made, the first volume of Cossington Registers contained Baptisms and Burials from 1544 to 1758, and Marriages from 1544 to 1753, except the years 1564-9. As this was given as the first volume of these parish registers in the various editions of the County Directories down to the last Incumbency, it is to be presumed that it remained in the parish to within late years; but, alas! it is no longer to be found. The present and the late Incumbent report that they have never seen it, and its loss and the uncertainty of the date when it occurred, are further evidence of the great need for efficient inventories of the churches in this Archdeaconry, wherein the loss of register books in modern times has reached proportions little short of scandalous.
The Bishops’ Transcripts supply certain years of the lost, volume. Previous to 1707 Mr. Hartopp records that there are Cossington Transcripts at Lincoln for 1604 and 1606-9, and at Leicester for the years 1561-2, 1594-5, 1612, 1617, 1621, 1622, 1625 to 1630, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1639, 1660 to 1663, 1673 to 1675, 1677, 1678, 1680, 1683 to 1685, 1687, 1690, 1691, 1693 to 1696, and 1700.
The Marriages here printed are contained in the following three volumes :—
Volume I., which consists of 21 paper leaves measuring 15 inches by 9¾ inches, with thick paper cover. This book contains ten leaves of Marriage Registers from July 22nd, 1754, to January 25th, 1802, inclusive. The remainder of the book is a Register of Banns of Marriage from 1754 to 1802.
Volume II. is also on paper, 50 leaves, size 15¼ inches by 9¾ inches, bound with leather back and corners. Only three leaves filled with Marriage Registers, from November 23rd, 1802, to July 28th, 1812 inclusive. The remaining leaves unused.
Volume III. is also on paper, 100 leaves, size 15½ inches by 10 inches. bound in white vellum, tied with four strings. Only 18 leaves are filled with Marriage Registers, from August 16th, 1813, to Aug. 28th, 1837. The remainder unused.
These abstracts of Marriages have been made by Miss Dora Stubbs and are now printed under her supervision by permission of the Rev. Newton Mant, the late Rector.
