Glen Parva was included in Aylestone parish until 1893, when, with South Wigston, it was constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish. Aylestone is now included within the Borough of Leicester, while South Wigston-cum-Glen Parva is outside it.
There is a tradition that Sir John Manners and Dorothy Vernon were married at Aylestone in 1558 but as that is before the Register begins there is no record of it therein.
The old Registers of Aylestone are especially fine, and in exceptionally beautiful condition; the two first Volumes have been rebound in 1912, in the original bindings; stout parchment boards with wallet-flaps and brass clasps, and the leaves are singularly free from stains, thumb marks and damage; the parchment being almost as clean and fresh as when new, and the writing, often very fine, is generally good and legible.
Volume I. “A perfect Register of all such Buryalls Christenings and Weaddinges wh. have bene in the Church of Aylestone from the xxiiijth day of April 1561.”
The first entry is “The xxiiijth day of Aprill was buried Thomas Wigston.
The book contains 102 parchment leaves measuring about 11 by 7 inches; with several paper fly-leaves at each end. After all the Burials, which come first, are several blank leaves. Burials from 1561 to 1701; Baptisms from 1560 to 1701, and Marriages from 1561 to 1701 are recorded herein.
Volume II. A similar book containing 70 parchment leaves measuring 13½ by 8 inches, there are several paper fly leaves at each end. Several leaves are blank. Recorded herein are Baptisms, 1702 to 1806; Marriages, 1702 to 1780, and Burials 1702 to 1806. Fifteen leaves, ten of parchment and five of paper, appear to have been added to this volume in order to contain the Marriages from April, 1760, to March, 1780. Two and a half of these parchment leaves are blank.
Volume III. Marriages, printed forms, 1780 to 1796. Eleven leaves contain Banns, one blank, 12 leaves contain the Marriages 72 forms being filled in.
Volume IV. Marriages 1796 to 1812; printed forms, Banns are entered on a fly leaf at the beginning; 103 Marriage entries are recorded on 13 leaves, 19 leaves are blank.
Volume V. Marriages, printed forms, 1813 to 1837.
Volume VI. Baptisms and Burials 1807 to 1812; parchment leaves in boards; only five leaves used.
Volume VII. Baptisms only, 1813 to 1852, printed forms, paper leaves in boards.
Volume VIII. Burials only, 1813 to 1871, printed forms.
Volume IX. Burials only, 1884 to 1891, “Nonconformists refusing Church Service”; it contains a note by the Rev. H. S. Gedge that he discontinued its use, not seeing the necessity for a separate register for Nonconformists.
All the volumes are in good condition, exceptionally well cared for.
These abstracts were taken by Mrs. Blagg from a typewritten transcript made by the Rev. H. S. Gedge, when rector of Aylestone, in 1897-8, as to the two oldest volumes and checked with the original Registers by Mr. E. K. Elliott. The later volumes were abstracted by Mr. Henry Hartopp with the consent of Canon Gedge, who also allowed them to be included in this series. They are also printed with the knowledge and assent of of the Bishop of Leicester, Rector of Aylestone since 1912.
