The Marriages at Leire previous to 1837 are contained in the following volumes :-
Volume I. consists of 54 leaves of parchments measuring for the most part 14 in by 6 in., bound in parchment—covered boards, and contains entries of Marriages from 1559 to 1754, and of Baptisms and Burials from 1559 to 1768 inclusive. The first forty years of this volume are, of course, only a transcript of a pre-existing original made in accordance with the Canon of 1597. The following notes occur at the head of the first page :—
“A Booke registring the names of all Baptismes. Marriages and Buryalls hadd or donne in the parishe of Leare in the Countie of Leicester trewly taken and written owt of the oulde booke being rent & torne & overwoorne wanting manie names from the first year of the raigne of Elizabeth by the grace of god Queen of England, etc. being Anno Domini 1559.
“This booke was copied owt Anno 41 Elizabeth dei gra[tiae] etc.p[er] me Alexander Shepperd rectorem ib[ide]m. Petro Gallard et Thoma Juce gardianis 1599 mense April[is].
“Ego Alexander Sheppard cl[er]icus in l[egibus bacc[alaurius] Rector eccl[es]iae de Lear pr[e]d[icta] crede o[mn]es ar[ticu]los fidei tam in Symbolo Apostoloru[m] quam in Nicen[ensi] et Athanas[iensi] content[os] etc.”
The burial of John Cheney, rector, is recorded in October, 1581, and after the entry is a space with the note “Hac desunt multa nomina non scripta post obitum rectoris.” A note at the top of the same page records of Francis, son of Clement Stretton, and Richard, son of Roger Flavell, “hii duo inveniunta in lacerata carta baptisati absque nomine Anni mensis vel diei.” The induction of Alexander Sheppard as rector is recorded as taking place 7 July, 1588.
There are many other entries of interest, but we can only menion the following : —
1638-9. Feb. 3. “John Crispe, a very old man, who was
about 110 years of age buried.”
1668. Aug 1. “John Higginson, an old man. of 94 years of
age, was buryed”
1672. July 17. “Mr. James Farmer, formerly Rector of this
parish, were buried. Son to the Lady Farmer.”
1717. Dec. 12. “Roger Lyon, of Barbados, was buryed.”
The register is entirely in Latin down to 1607 and occasionally thereafter.
In addition to the register proper, on parchment, as described above, there are several paper leaves at the front and back of this volume. Two and a-half pages of these are occupied by a detailed “Terrier of the Rights of the Church of Leir” dated 13 June, 1724, together with a schedule of the Glebe land “intermixed in the three open fields.” This interesting terrier recites nearly all the field names and names of occupiers of land in the parish at this date. Another page bears memoranda of two bequests, one by Mr. William Bryan, confectioner in Cambridge, in 1695. and the other by the Rev. Mr. Seagrave of ten shillings a year “to encourage poor children to come to the Church to be catechised. Payable on St. Thomas’ Day.”
Volume II. consists of only 11 leaves of ruled parchment in a cover of brown paper, and contains Marriages from 1754 to 1772.
Volume III. of unruled parchment contains Marriages from 1772 to 1802, and Baptisms and Burials from 1769 to 1812.
Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1803 to 1812.
Volume V., Marriages 1813 to 1837.
The Marriages in Volume I. have been abstracted by Mr. Harold Mason and checked with the originals and the volume collated by Mr. T. M. Blagg. Those in the later volumes have been kindly copied by the present Rector, the Rev. A. Manwaring, by whose permission all are now printed.
