With Tilton go the hamlets of Halstead, Marefield and Whadborough. The Tilton Registers begin in 1610 for Baptisms and Burials, but there are no Marriage entries before 1631. The earliest Register, as appears from the Transcripts, is lost.
Volume I. consists of 34 parchment leaves measuring 14¼ -7/8 by 5¾ inches, very loose in its parchment binding. It records Marriages 1631-1706, Baptisms and Burials (at end inverted) 1610 to 1706. The heading is, “A Register booke of those that av [sic] be— [rest torn off] or Christened in the parish Church [torn off] ylton in Leicestershire by Chr[istopher, torn off; occurs later] Denne Vicar of Tylton.”
The first entry :—“ Richard Davy the sonne of John Davy of torn off] was born March 1st and baptized March 3” [torn, 1610].
The first 15½ leaves contain Births and Baptisms with a very occasional Burial. On page 2, leaf 16, in 1667, and on leaf 17 at foot of which is, “turned ye Leafe backwards,” is a list of Briefs for fires, etc., including the Great Fire of London (1666), £3 14s. Marriages begin on leaf 18. Entries are classified. Nearly three inches is torn off the bottom of leaves 4 and 5 containing entries for 1625 and 1627 all apparently Baptisms or Burials. Where the Marriage entries end one page is blank save for three entries and the next page quite blank.
On leaf 13, page 1, under 1663 is the heading, “A Register of those that were baptised or christened in the Parish church of Tylton in Leicestershire by John Gray, Vicar, beginning An° Dom: 1663.” There is a similar heading in 1673, John Smith, Vicar.
There are no Marriages registered in 1646-50 nor in 1725-30. It is noteworthy that a long period before Marriages are registered at all occurs in both Volumes I. and II. This, apparently an oversight, occurs not infrequently.
These good names occur : —
Nicolls (1610), Garfield (1633), Digby. Sir Everard Digby, of Gunpowder Plot fame, owned Tilton Manor and is supposed to be buried in the Church, but his tomb cannot be certainly identified; Claypool (1748).
Volume II. This is dreadfully muddled. It consists of two blank paper flyleaves, at beginning, portions of a Bible! none at end, 30 parchment leaves about 14 by 6 inches, strongly bound in leather, clasps broken off. Writing is faint in places but generally legible, condition is good. Contents, Baptisms 1707-28 at one end, 1728-72 at the other; Burials 1707-71; Marriages 1707-24, and before them 1731-50, and inverted at other end 1764-72.
At one end is this heading, “This Register Booke belongeth to the parish of Tilton in the County of Leicester wherein are the names and Sirnames of those wh. have been baptized and married or buried by John Smith Vicar ib[ide]m beginning in 1707.” At the other end is this heading, “A Register book of those which have been buried in the parish of Tilton in the County of Leicester by Jo: Smith Vicar ib[ide]m beginning in 1707.”
Marriages in 1706 begin on leaf 11 from the Burials end and continue to 1724 on next page. None in 1725-30. Turn back six leaves when Marriages 1731-61 are recorded beginning on leaf 4, page 2, alternately with other entries. Then invert the book, turn five leaves and on leaf 5, page 2, and subsequent leaves are the Marriages for 1764-72. Of course most of these should have been in a printed-form register, but none such was used until 1773. Perhaps it was thought well to use the parchment book up, the entries for this period follow the printed form more or less and are signed.
After the Burials in 1721 half a page is blank; at top of next page are nine Burial entries in 1714 and, “This should have been inserted in the proper place.”

Volume III. Marriages 1773-1812. Paper leaves bound leather, printed form. Two Baptisms are registered on a fragment of a flyleaf at the beginning, the rest is cut away.
Volume IV. Births and Baptisms 1773-1801. Burials 1772-99 inverted at end. Two blank paper flyleaves at beginning, one at end. Eight parchment leaves, bound in parchment boards several leaves cut out of middle, otherwise in good condition.
Volume V. Baptisms, duplicating Volume II. for 1772, and Burials. 1772-1812. This volume is largely a duplicate or copy of Volume IV., finely written all in one hand on one side the leaf only throughout. Forty parchment leaves in tooled calf binding, in excellent condition.
Volume VI. Marriages 1813-36. None in 1837. Printed form.
