Nichols, in his History of Leicestershire Vol. II, p. 226, say of Plungar Registers—
“There is no register to be found of an earlier date than 1759. The late clerk of the parish was the village grocer; and, having no reverence for antiquity, nor probably any other idea of the use of paper than it served to wrap up tea and snuff in, he made it answer that purpose ; and indeed, if it were no better kept than the early part of the present, it could have answered no better.”
There does, however, exist a fragment of an earlier volume than that of 1759 mentioned by Nichols. This fragment (which is recorded in the Parliamentary Return of 1831) consists of six loose leaves of thin parchment measuring about 16 inches by 9½, and containing entries of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1695 to 1732 inclusive, except the years 1718 to 1723, the leaf containing which has disappeared. These six leaves, all that are left of the grocer-clerk’s private store of “grease proof” paper, are in four loose pieces, and ought to be stitched together in a cover before any more of them are lost.
At Leicester are transcripts of the lost ancient register of Plungar for the years 1578, 1579-80, another of the sixteenth century, year uncertain, and for the following years in the seventeenth century :—1601, 1612, 1613, 1616, 1617, 1621, 1622, 1625 to 1629, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1638, 1660 to 1663, 1665, 1667, 1672, 1674 to 1683, 1687, 1688, 1690 to 1692, 1694 to 1700. At Lincoln there are transcripts for 1604, 1606-1609 and 1617.
Volume II. (counting the above fragment as Volume I.) consists of twelve leaves of stout parchment about 14 inches by 8, sewn into a brown paper cover. It contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1759 to 1812.
Volume III. is a folio book of printed forms, all on parchment leaves, containing entries of Marriages from 1754 to 1812. Many of these entries are very imperfect owing to an indolent
parson having been content to let the contracting parties sign the blank form in register, and never troubling himself to fill in particulars of names, date, place of residence, etc.
Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
These marriage entries have been abstracted by Mrs. Blagg, of Newark, by permission of the Rev. John T. Bell, Vicar of Barkston and Plungar. The Marriages from Vol. IV. have been copied by Miss Gladys Bell.
