Volume I. consists of 34 leaves of parchment and four paper fly leaves bound in boards, the leaves measuring 11 1/8 ins. by 8¼ ins. The last two leaves of parchment contain a list of Churchwardens, 1700 to 1711, and Constables, 1700 to 1726. This volume contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1700 to 1749.
Volume II is also on parchment, 23 leaves, and bound in beards The leaves measure 15¾ ins. by 6¼ ins. There are some Baptisms on a paper “fly” leaf at the end. This volume contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1750 to 1802. Near the end are the details of the donation of two Bibles every year “given out of William Chester’s money,” beginning 1780.
Volume III. is the Register of Banns and Marriages, “pursuant to the form prescribed by an Act of Parliament passed in the 26th year of King George II.,” 1755 to 1812. Thus all marriages, with one or two exceptions, between 1755 and 1802 are registered both in Volume II. and Volume III., the former being probably the work of the Clerk. In a very few instances only do the spellings agree. For the purpose of the abstracts here printed the entries of both volumes have been collated and all material differences recorded.
Volume IV. is on parchment and contains the entries of Burials and Baptisms from 1802 to 1812, together with the account of the donation of the two Bibles every year between 1803 and 1816.
Volume V. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
A Curious romance attaches to the fate of an earlier volume of Harby Parish Registers, long lost, even in Nichols time. The skins of parchment of which it consisted are said to have been unstitched and wrapped round the trunk and limbs of the corpse of Anne Adcock, and so buried by her grandson, John Adcock, a man of eccentric character, in Decemher, 1776. For the most part, of course, the information contained in this volume is for ever lost, but transcripts exist at Lincoln for the years 1604, 1606 to 1609 and 1618; and at Leicester for 1581, 1612, 1613, 1617, 1621, 1625 to 1629, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1638, 1661 to 1663, 1670, 1672, 1674 to 1683, 1685, 1687, 1688, 1690, 1691, and 1694 to 1700.
