The first volume of the parish registers of Bitteswell consists, within a parchment cover, of 45 leaves of parchment, measuring mostly about 14 by 6 inches, but the 23rd leaf is a fragment only 3½ inches deep. Except the nineteenth leaf, those numbering 2 to 23 are devoted to Baptisms from 1558 to 1704 inclusive. The Weddings are by themselves, occupying leaves 24 to 29 inclusive and comprising the years 1558 to 1707. Leaves 30 to 44 contain the Burials, 1559 to 1708. The last leaf of parchment (No. 45) is headed: “A tru note of the partes & how they ly upon the new division, to begin at the Churchyard gate next to the pinfold and so to go round about the waull untill you come to Snealsones House,” then follows a list of all the parishioners who were responsible for the maintenance of various sections of the churchyard fence with the number of “yardlands” each was assessed at for the purpose. Similar lists occur in the parish registers of Cropwell Bishop, Notts (dated 1670), and Weston-on-Trent, in Derbyshire. The other side of this leaf bears a memorandum of Edward Duckemanton having read the 39 Articles, etc., 13 July, 1606, with a list of witnesses; and a note dated 9 February, 1688, of the receipt of a bequest from Elizabeth, the widow of Robert Lord. On the first two pages of this volume are sundry memoranda of Collections by Briefs in the latter half of the 17th century, of the usual type.
The years 1558 to 1599 are, of course, a transcript of an earlier register, made in accordance with the Canon of 1597. This Canon, re-enacted in 1603, urged the transcription on to parchment “of every christening, wedding and burial . . . since the time that the law was first made in that behalf [i.e. 1538] so far as the ancient books thereof can be procured, but especially since the beginning of the reign of the late Queen.” It is this last unfortunate sentence which is responsible for so many of our extant registers beginning in 1558 and 1559 instead of in 1538, for the lazy transcribers, ignoring the spirit of the Canon and obeying only its letter, in most instances did the minimum amount of work, and the records for the first twenty years of the registers are for most parishes for ever lost. Queen Elizabeth came to the throne on November 17th, 1558, and the earliest entry in Bitteswell Registers is dated three days later, so the transcriber here, though he did his work neatly and legibly, did no more than he was obliged, ignoring even the earlier entries for the year in which the reign began.
It is evident that the parish of Bitteswell elected no lay registrar in the year 1653 as the Act of Parliament commanded it to do, for the note to that effect appearing among the marriage entries (here printed) is repeated also among the Baptisms and Burials. Among the Baptisms occurs an interesting example of the mutation of surnames, a man’s name appearing as Ambrose Wettinghall in 1587 while in the very next year he is described as Ambrose Wettall, without any symbol of contraction.
Among the burial entries for 1686 is written the following interesting memorandum concerning tithes :-*
“A transcription of Customes For all Tithings due to the Vicar of Bitteswell rates and others As they have bin recorded by Mr. Edw. *The Regsters of Quendon, in Essex, contain very similar particulars of the method of tithing, with the re-bates for shortages, of the date 1587.
!Ob = obolus. a halfpenny.
The most uncommon feature of this first volume of Bitteswell is the fact that the nineteenth leaf is devoted to the signatures of those who took the oath of Protestation in 1641. This we print with those of three other Leicestershire parishes as an Appendix to this volume of Marriage Registers.
Volume II. is of parchment, the cover detached and leaves loose. It is filled in the following order, Marriages 1709-1754 on the first three leaves followed by nine blanks, then Baptisms 1709-1812 on eleven leaves followed by six blank, then Burials 1709-1812 on twelve leaves followed by three blank. There are altogether 45 leaves, 15 by 8½ inches, and part of a 46th leaf 4 by 8½ inches, the two last containing notes which are given below.
On a sheet of paper attached to the cover at the beginning of the book is written
“A Registr. of Bitteswell begun March 25, 1709 By Samuel Nicholson, Vicar of Bitteswell. This book was bought by Mr. Thomas Sanderson and David Frost, Churchwardens, in ye year 1708, in which year they beautifyed the Church.
In the year 1709 the Parsonage House was repaired and enlarged by Sam: Nicholson the then Vicar.”
On the back of the 45th leaf the following statistics of the population of Bitteswell are given and the first three years are signed by the then Vicar, J. Powell :—-
“1800, males 192, females 206, Total 398.”
“1810, males 178, females 174, Total 352.”
“1821, males 223, females 204, Total 427.”
“1831, Total 439.”
“1841, Total 495.”
and also a note as follows, signed by J.Powell
“The inside of the Church was repaired, or rather, it should be said, was new made, in the year 1822. The wood was carved by William Broughton, who was born at Gilmorton in this County and is now married and settled in this parish, and the whole of the work was erected under his superintendence and direction. The plan of the work was given and drawn by Mr. Mawley, Architect, London.”
On the small part remaining of the last leaf there is written :-
“To prevent any ground of suspicion against any future minister, on account of leaves wanting, I certify that this is the last page in this register at the present writing, viz., Dec. 26,* 1768, and has been such according to my apprehension for six years past.
J. C. HITCHCOCK, Vicr. or Rectr., or both.”
*It should have been November 26. J. C. H.
A peculiarity of the entries in this Register of Marriages is the number or non residents who were married by licence in the years 1748-1754.
Volumes III., IV., and V. are of the usual type.
These Marriages have been abstracted by Mr. T. M. Blagg (1558-1708), and the Rev. A. Manwaring (1709-1837), and are now printed under their supervision by permission of the Rev. C. E. Ward, Vicar of Bitteswell.
