Fortunately, Braunston still possesses its earliest Register which, bound in the usual limp parchment, consists of 21 parchment leaves measuring, with some variation, nearly 11 7/8 by 5½ inches.
The heading at the beginning is :—
“The Regester book of all the christenings [Sic, in two lines] weddings and Burialls made in Braunston in the pishe of Glenfilde in thirde yeare of the raigne of our soveraigne Lady Quieene Elizabeth.”
The first entry is :—“Allis Gallarde was Bapt. the 6th of June” (1561)
At the top of page 2, leaf 7, is the heading :—
“Christenings Anonis in pagina postrema millessimus sexcentessimus octavus ultime notatus ibidem sic continuatur et p[ro?] greditur in forma sequenti.”
This volume registers Baptisms 1561 to 1655, Marriages 1561 to 1653, and Burials 1568 to 1639. The sequence of the entries is erratic, as follows: Baptisms fill the first eight leaves except two Burials in 1620 at foot of page 16. Mixed entries (only three, Marriages noted in loco) fill the next 4½ leaves. Weddings then fill 3 1/3 leaves. Burials in 1658 begin on leaf 17, continue to the end of the book and to 1639; but Burials in 1620-29 occur among the mixed entries page 16 onwards. The book is a transcript down to 1599. It is in fair condition, the last leaf is almost loose; the writing is mostly good and legible, but very poor ink has caused some entries to fade nearly out, and a few are difficult to decipher certainly.
Volume II. “The Register Booke of all the Births Weddinges and Burialls in Branston in the yeare of our Lord one thousand six hundr ffifty five.”
Limp parchment covers contain 45 parchment leaves, most of them measuring 11¼ to 11 3/8 by about 7¼ to 7½ inches. Leaf 2 is torn, leaf 11 is cut, leaf 12 has a triangular piece cut out out with part of an entry, which however can be read from the context. After leaf 15, four odd-shaped leaves are loosely sewn in; the first and fourth measure about 9 by 7 inches; he second about 9 by 5¾ inches, and the third about 7½ by 5¾ inches; they contam Baptisms and Births in 1751-60. Leaves 20 and 21 are only 10¾ inches long, but have not been cut. Leaves 22 and 23 are blank. Leaf 33 has ¾ inch cut off the bottom evidently carrying one and possibly more entries. Leaves 39 and 40 have been loosely sewn in and measure nearly 10 by 7¼ inches; they carry Burials in 1748-66. Page 2 of leaf 43 is blank. Leaf 44, half of which is cut away, records mortuary fees only. Leaf 45 records briefs. The book, except as mentioned, is in fair order.
The first 21 leaves register Births and Baptisms in 1655-1782, but some Births and Baptisms in 1778-83 follow Burials on leaves 42 and 43. Leaves 24 to 28 record all the Marriages, 1637-1765. Leaves 29 to 43 (page 1 only) record Burials, 1655-1783; except as mentioned entries are classified throughout. The writing of the early part is bad, and ink often very poor, many names are difficult to read with certainty.
Volume III. A large parchment book, in parchment boards, in excellent condition. It registers Baptisms and Burials in 1784-1812. Marriages 1786-89 all but one duplicated, with discrepancies, noted in loco, in Volume IV.
