Birstall, formerly spelt Burstall, has always been a Chapelry of Belgrave, to which it is the next village. It was so in 1220, when the Abbot of St. Ebrulf in Normandy was the patron, and was to be supplied by the mother-church with a resident chaplain.* Therefore Marriages from Birstall often took place at Belgrave.
Volume I. records mixed Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1574 to 1681. To 1599, it is a Transcript of an earlier book. The Bishops’ Transcripts exist for the following years earlier than the existing Registers :—1561-2, 1565-6, 1569. These Transcripts contain some fifty Marriages. All are in the Archdeacon’s Registry at Leicester. This volume contains 25 parchment leaves measuring 14¾ by 5½-5¾ inches, bound in limp parchment. A corner with portions of several entries is torn off the last leaf. Condition very bad, rubbed, stained and dirty, loose in binding, the first four leaves quite loose (Nicholls mentions this before 1811) therefore badly rubbed on pages 1 and 8; many entries faded, rubbed and more or less illegible. Rebinding is urgently needed. The writing is generally good until 1639, after which it is generally illiterate and bad. There is no marriage entry from 1638-52 nor from 1657-68 inclusive. No volumes contain specially interesting or extra-registerial entries worth quoting. At end of the book are 19 paper leaves (many torn or pieces cut away) containing Churchwardens’ accounts from about 1726 to 1742, these were stitched in, but are now loose.
Volume II. records mixed entries of all classes from 1705 to 1730. On the cover is “Register of Birstall 1695.” Also “10 years lost [1695-1705], R. S[tephens] and, “The 70 years of the register were lost before Richard Stephens was Vicar.” The book now contains 71 parchment leaves measuring nearly 13 by 7 3/8 inches with one paper leaf each end. Bound in limp parchment. Five leaves (presumably containing the missing years) have been cut out at the beginning, and six or eight at end; these last were probably blank as there is no gap between this volume and the next. As the existing first volume ends in 1680 and this one only began originally in 1695 there is a further gap of 12 years between the two. Also this book is very carelessly kept (Nicholls says this also) and comparison of the average number of entries with
earlier and later volumes suggests that there must have been many omissions. The writing is generally, not always, bad, crooked, and illiterate, but generally legible. Ignorant persons, apparently the parish clerks, have scribbled shamefully on covers and pages.
Volume III. records all classes of mixed entries, 1731 to 1764, and contains 23 thick parchment leaves measuring 9½ by 7½ inches, bound in parchment boards and in fairly good order. Writing and spelling nearly always illiterate, but generally legible, except where, as often, faded or rubbed. In the years 1748-49 someone has inserted the dates 1749-50 respectively in the margin opposite the entries from January onwards in each year, and in 1749 a pencil line is drawn across at that point. A line is also drawn across but no date inserted after December, 1750. Of course this is wrong, as the year was then reckoned to begin from March.
Volume IV., Banns and Marriages, 1754-1775, contains ten ruled parchment leaves 12¼ by 8½ inches; no covers, therefore badly rubbed, stained and “dogseared," consequently several entries are very difficult to react. Urgently needs cleaning, restoring and binding.
Volume V., Banns and Marriages, 1775-1812, printed form, hound in rough calf, in good order.
Volume VI. records Baptisms and Burials only 1763-1812. Thirty parchment leaves 14¼ by 9½ inches, seven at end blank, binding parchment boards, fair order, several leaves damaged by heat or damp. Writing as before.
Volume VII., Marriages only, 1813-37, printed form. Paper leaves, good order.
