The following is a description of the earlier volumes of Pickwell Registers.
Vol. I. consists of twenty-three leaves of parchment, measuring 15 by 6 inches, sewn in parchment covers. It contains entries of Baptisms, 1572 to 1690, marriages, 1570 to 1678, and burials, 1570 to 1689, classified till about 1670, from which date the Baptisms and Burials are mixed. With the exception of a single Marriage in 1661 (recorded with the Burials) the entries of Marriages are separate throughout. Like most early registers, the Volume from its commencement to 1599, is a good transcript of an earlier book, now lost, attested by William Poclington, the then Rector, and the Churchwardens. A few entries are almost illegible, but
otherwise the Volume is in a fair state of preservation.
Vol. II., same size as Vol. I., consists of fifteen leaves of parchment, in covers of the same, and several fly leaves of paper. It is a mixed Register, in very good condition, containing entries of Baptisms, 1690 to 1760, Marriages, 1695 to 1754, and Burials 1692 to 1760. It also contains an account of the glebe lands as recorded in Vol. I., names and dates of several rectors, lists of fees, etc.
Vol. III, consists of seven parchment leaves, 16 by 7¾ inches, in vellum boards, containing Baptisms and Burials, 1756 to 1783, and from 1795 to 1812. Only one Marriage, in 1776, is recorded in this Volume.
Vol. IV., a paper book of printed forms, 14½ by 9½ inches, bound in stout boards, many leaves blank. It contains Marriages and Banns, 1754 to 1811 inclusive. Baptisms and Burials, 1783 to 1794, on stamped sheets, as required by the Stamp Act of 1783, are placed in this Volume.
Vol. V., the usual paper book of printed forms, in accordance with Rose’s Act, contains Marriages only, 1814 to 1841 inclusive. The leaves measure 15½ by 9¾ inches, many being blank.
These Marriage entries have been abstracted by Mr. Henry Hartopp, of Leicester, by kind permission of the Rev. Dr. Hermitage Day, Rector of Pickwell.
