Phillimore's Marriages - Catthorpe 1573 to 1837

The first volume of Catthorpe Registers consist of fiftyone leaves of parchment, measuring 11¾ by 6¾ inches, bound in a calf cover.

On the inside of the cover occurs the following note :—-

“This Register was copied from the old Register of Catthorpe by desire of the Revd. Mr Archdeacon Burnaby in the year 1797. Saml. P. Harpur, Rector.

The first page of the Register is headed “The Register Book of all such Marryages, Christenings, and Buryals as have been in the Parish of Thorpe Thomas the year of our Lord 1573.”

And below is found the Church’s rule about marriage :-

“Memd., Matrimonium non potest fieri prima Dominica Adventus usq. ad Octaves Epiphaniae Exclusive. Et A Dominica 70 usq. ad primam Dominican, post pacha. Inclusive. Et a primo die Rogati onum usq. ad septimum diem festi pentecostes Inclusive. Licet quoad vinculum hic Diebus contralii possit Dominica Trinitatis Nuptiae celebrari Extracto de fieri.”

The first Rector who signs the Register is Thomas Lee. He died in 1624, he was succeeded by Joseph Lee.

“Joseph Lee, clerk and Master of Arts was inducted into this Church of Catthorpe alias Thorpe Thomas by Henry Dillingham, Clerk, April 11th Anno Dni 1625.”

Joseph Lee signs the Register for the last time in 1640.

From 1640—1646 there are no records of Baptisms, Marriages, or Burials.

Under the heading “Incipit Annus die vicessimo quinto Martii Anno Dom 1645,” occurs the following note :—

Gulielmus Deane, Rector, inductus erat Decemb. 28.”

In the Register for 1686 it is written :—

Gulielmus Deane hujus ecclesiae, Rector, sepultus fuit Decembris 23d Anno Dni 1686.”
And “Johannes Cave ad Rectoriam hujus Ecclesiae inductus Fuit.”

In 1733 there is the following entry :—

“Johes Cave, clericus, Rector hujus parochial. obiit vicessimo Sexto die Semptembris et sepultus fuit vicesimo octavo ejusdem mensis. Wm. Byrd, Sequestrator.”

The living appears to have been left vacant until 1742.

“John Dyer was inducted to the Rectory of Catthorpe the 2nd May, 1742.”

This volume contains the entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1573-1793,and of Marriages from 1573-1753.

In the last half of the 17th century the words paroesia or paroshia are used for parish, in place of the usual parochia.

Volume II. is bound in leather with paper leaves, size 16½ by 10 inches ; the entries only extend to nine pages, the remainder of the volume being unused.

The entries in this volume are of marriages only and extend
from 1754 to 1812.

Volume III. bound in calf, with paper leaves 16 inches by 10; the entries cover 5½ pages. On the first page is the memorandum

“There were no marriages in this parish in the year 1813.”

The entries are those of the years 1814-1836 inclusive.

These Marriages have been abstracted by the Rev. R. H. B. Crosthwaite, Rector of Catthorpe and are now printed under his supervision.
