The Parliamentary Return of 1831 gives the earliest then known Register of Humberstone as dating from 1578; but modern Directories and records state 1683. It was supposed therefore, that the intervening century’s register had been lost since 1831. But when examining the Registers of this Parish, Mr. Beasley made the interesting discovery of the missing Register, a volume beginning (Burials only) in 1552.
It is easy to understand the 1683 commencement, for this is the beginning of what is now the second volume: but an explanation of the 1578 date cannot be conjectured. There may have been a paper copy in existence commencing then, and the present first volume might have been missing at that date.
Volume I. is in a poor condition from damp, and with the difficult caligraphy and limp state, without a cover, it may have been looked upon as a bundle of old parchment, unrecognizable: this is strange, however, for it is understood diligent search has been made for this earlier volume. As late as December, 1909, Mr. Sherwood in his “Pedigree Register,” reports that after persistent search there has been a failure in finding it. Hence the discovery by Mr. Beasley is all the more gratifying, and encourages the hope that other registers believed to be irretrievably lost may yet be found. The systematic and thorough investigation of the Parish Registers that is now being made by this Series, proves far more reliable than a Parliamentary Return : and gives point to the urgency of printing and making permanent such historic and fragile documents.
The earlier Registers of Humberstone are ten in number as follows:-
Volume I, 1552 to 1678, All classes of entries.
Volume II, 1683 to 1737,
Volume III, 1738 to 1802, Baptisms and Burials.
Volume IV, 1754 to 1812, Marriages.
Volume V, 1802 to 1812, Baptisms and Burials.
Volume VI, 1813 to 1862, Baptisms.
Volume VII, 1813 to 1837, Marriages.
Volume VIII, 1813 to 1886, Burials.
Volume IX, 1863 to 1909, Baptisms.
And then follow the current volumes.
Volume I. Size 10 by 11¾ inches. A folio volume of 23 parchment leaves, the last of which is much thicker than the others, and was evidently added as a continuation when full. There were not any covers, but the transcriber who has thought to help preserve it has added a parchment cover and numbered all the volumes, here referred to, on the first page clearly.
The Volume commences with six pages of Baptisms, 1557 to 1602, about 190 entries, all very faded except the last page. These follow line by line in the same hand and have evidently been recopied from an earlier book.
From 1597 to 1653 there are mixed entries in rotation two—thirds of a blank page appears, and a fresh heading on the following. with the years 1636-9. The Burials are only on one page.
Next are two pages of Marriages, again a copy of a former book, 1559—99 it is a few of these latter that appear in their proper place as original entries earlier.
Two pages of closely written Burials follow, 1552, altered from 1572, but there is evidence the 1552 is correct, for a few lines lower down there are entries for 1559. The Burials occupy two
pages.
Then comes on the next page a separate list of Burials for the years 1644 to 1653, and a summary of the monthly burials for 1559 and 1670.
On the following page there is a fresh start of the three classes for 1653-58 and two thirds of a blank page to finish.
Following these are classified births or christenings, marriages, and burials for 1656—78, the end of the volume, and these are in various writings.
Hence this volume is very much mixed up and liable to lead to ommissions on the part of the transcriber, and there may be duplicate entries.
Volume II. Size 12 by 7½ inches with 21 parchment leaves and limp vellum cover with four vellum cords in binding. It contains mixed entries 1683 to 1737. The handwriting is poor and many names are in the vernacular, thus making the correct spelling of the Register much in doubt, which has led the transcriber to indicate in brackets what surname of today is most probably indicated. The place names are peculiar and not unusual in the County, such as “Avington” for “Evington,” Alestone, Burstall, Sison, etc.
Volume III. Size 16 by 10 inches, with 20 thick cut parchment leaves and two paper ditto front and back with a birth on each. Bound in vellum boards, and in a fair state of preservation and without any torn or missing leaves.
It contains mixed entries for first fifteen years and then Baptisms and Burials only.
Volume IV. This is the usual printed paper-leaved book as ordered by the Hardwick Act, and gives Marriages only, for years 1754 to 1812. Thirty nine pages only out of 84 have been used. It is in fair condition and well written.
Volume VII. This is the paper-leaved book with printed forms in accordance with the Rose Act, and gives Marriages from 1812 to 1837. Only 25 pages out of 99 have been used.
The rest of the volumes need no special comment, beyond that already given.
These Abstracts have been made by Mr. J. A. L. Beasley, of Leicester, with the permission of the Rev. A. N. Bates, Rector, with whose consent they are now printed, after having been checked over with the originals by Mr. E. K. Elliott.

The full designation of the parties in the past few entries may be accounted for from the appointment of a Presbyter in this year; although this would not explain the like for the previous two years, unless this same person was acting previous to his official appointment. In an entry for this year of the baptism of his daughter, he is described as “Thomas Bosse, preist.”]
Charles Blythe, gent., & Barbara Hastings, gent. 24 Apr. 1639
Thomas Telebee [? Tailby] & Margaret Hick[blotted] 6 July 1642
[This last is the only marriage entry from 1639 to 1646, and it is found in a distinct writing with the two other classes mixed. The Register has apparently been badly kept for this period, since there are not the average number of entries ; there are only four baptisms for 1640 and one for the following year, and no burials for either of these years. In 1642-4 christenings and burials are resumed, and in the middle of the latter year a change occurs in the writing. This coincides with the deposing of the 7,000 church clergy. John Musson was “minister” part of the time. In 1649 Francis Hanmer became vicar]

Thomas Wood & Elizabeth Symkin 28 Dec. 1651
George Kinge, of Stappleford, & Alice his wife 5 Apr. 1651
Richard Burnam & Elizabeth Hames 7 July 1651
The entries for the last year are not to be relied upon for accuracy, since in the case of the one for the 31st May there is added “or thereabouts.” All of them appear to have been written at one time, probably from memory or rough notes. No further entries occur till the year 1653, when “Parish Registers” were appointed. The following is a verbatim extract.
“This is to signify unto whome it may concerne That Anthony Palmer, of Humberstone, beinge elected parrish Register for the parrish of Humberston affoursaid, by the inhabitants of the said parrish did Before mee, Willm Danvers, Esqr., one of the Justices of the Peace for the County, upon the Third day of December instant, take his oath for the faithful discharge of the said office. “Witness my hand this 8th day of December, 1653, “(Signed) Will Danvers.”
There is only one entry of a Civil marriage in full, so it is given as follows :-
“Christopher Allmye, son of Christopher Allmye, of H., in the Co. of Leic., laborer, maried unto Elizabeth Worth, daughter of Thomas Worth, of the same Parrish and Countie, husbandmane, before Thomas Putchin [Pochin] of barckbye Thorpe in the aforesaid Countie of Lester, Esq., one of the Justices of the Peace for the same Countie.” 10 March, 1653.
There are no further entries till 1657; and the following five items give indications of being inserted at a later date, possibly after the Restoration :-
Humphrey Dorman & Sarah Hunt 16 Apr. 1657
John Hunt & Elizabeth Croson 2 May 1657
John Jackson & Elisabeth Matchett 17 Aug. 1657
John Kennett & Mrs. Mary Rogers 1 Apr. 1658
