Quorn village websites

There are two fantastic websites for the village Quorn, maintained by Tim Rodgers.

The Quorn village website and also the Quorn museum website have so much information I cannot start to list it all here but it includes, census transcripts from 1841 to 1901 and also Quorn graves which were recorded in 1981 by the Women's Institute.

It is also great to see old photographs of the village.

Another recommend from me if your family came from Quorn and also if you live in Quorn and you are interested in the village history.

Newton Burgoland - Baptism Records and Sunday School Book Register

I have been fortunate with my family research in that, I have found like minded researchers who have gone that extra mile and shared valuable copies of records with me, such as the ones I am listing here and again I feel that these should be available to other researchers. I am unaware if these are also available at The Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland but it is likely that they are. The photographs, are of the records still kept at Newton Burgoland.

I haven't had time yet to transcribe these records but I am very happy to view these for names and send copies of the relevant pages. The most common surnames I have noticed for Newton Burgoland are:- Whyman, Timms, Smith, Fawkes or Fowkes, Haywood or Heywood, Croxtall, Brockley, Croshaw, Meakin, Jones, Knight, Jebbett and Posin. Sunday School Book Register.

1806 to 1905

The Sunday School Book Register, lists the child's name, parent's name, residence and remarks. Remarks include, dates and why the child left, residence not only includes Newton Burgoland but also Newton Nethercote, Shackerstone, Odstone, Snarestone, Swepstone, Heather and Tuckers Holt for example

The first entry in the register is Ann Whyman daughter of Thomas Whyman, residence Newton Burgoland, dismissed with a bible.

The last entry in the register is on the 14th January 1906 Alice Billings, no place of residence and or the name of her parents.

After 1897 there appears to be no attention to detail, perhaps because children now were attending daily school.

Phillimore's Marriages - Seagrave 1682 to 1837

The Marriages in these Registers are contained in three volumes.

Volume I. consists of 34½ leaves of parchment, measuring 11½ inches by 7 inches, with a cover of parchment. Thirty and a-half of the leaves contain the Baptisms and Burials from 1682 to 1783, the Baptisms and Burials being written on opposite pages throughout, except just at the end, where the Baptisms appear to have taken up more room than the Burials and are continuous for five and a half pages. At the bottom of every page is the signature of the Rector and Churchwarden. The other four leaves contain the Marriages from 1682 to 1753.

On the first page of Volume I at the top there is a list of the names of the Rectors of Seagrave since the Reformation (commencing with the name G. Savage below) with this note added:-

“A.D. 1736. This memorandum was made.”
At the bottom there is
“J. Rogers, Rector” [apparently the signature of the man who made the above memorandum, and who was Rector, 1736.]

And then comes this note :—

“G. Savage, Archdeacon of Glocester, Sep[ultus] fuerat 16 die Julii Anno Dom. 1602, is uti dicitur apud Opidanos.

Volume II. is of folio size, bound in brown leather, and contains 12 leaves of parchment, on which records of Banns and Marriages are written from 1755 to 1772, followed by a number of paper leaves with printed forms filled up of (1) Banns of Marriage, 1772-1808, (2) Marriages, 1772—1812.

Volume III, is also of folio size, bound in white leather, its leaves being of paper. On 23½ of its 100 pages the printed forms are filled up with records of Marriages from 1813 to 1836.

These Marriage Registers have been copied by the Rev. C. R. Gilbert, Rector, and are now printed with his permission.

Phillimore's Marriages - Ratcliffe on the Wreak 1698 to 1837

The first volume of Ratcliffe Registers is bound in parchment covered boards, and consists of fifteen parchment leaves, measuring 14½ inches by 8¾ inches. Some blank leaves have been cut away at the end of the volume, and others appear to be missing at the beginning. Three pages are taken up with parish memoranda. This volume contains Baptisms and Burials from 1699 to 1801, and Marriages from 1698 to 1760. Transcripts of an earlier volume of Ratcliffe Registers are preserved at Lincoln and Leicester. At Lincoln, 1606 to 1609. At Leicester, 1566, 1578-9, 1612, 1621, 1622, 1625 to 1629, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1639, 1660 to 1664, 1671 to 1680, 1682, 1683, 1685 to 1687, 1690 to 1696, 1698 to 1700.

A supplemental volume in small folio consists of fifteen parchment leaves measuring 12¾ inches by 8½ inches, and bound in rough calf. This volume contains Baptisms and Burials from 1802 to 1812, these entries only occupying four and a-half pages, the remainder of the leaves being blank.

Volume II. is “the Register Book for the Registering of all Banns and Marriages published or solemnized in the Parish Church of Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreak.” This volume, consisting of ten parchment leaves bound in paper covers, contains entries of Banns and Marriages from 1754 to 1808.

Volume III. a folio book of paper leaves (printed forms) contains Marriages from 1815 to 1837.

Phillimore's Marriages - Cossington 1754 to 1837

When the Parliamentary Return of 1831 was made, the first volume of Cossington Registers contained Baptisms and Burials from 1544 to 1758, and Marriages from 1544 to 1753, except the years 1564-9. As this was given as the first volume of these parish registers in the various editions of the County Directories down to the last Incumbency, it is to be presumed that it remained in the parish to within late years; but, alas! it is no longer to be found. The present and the late Incumbent report that they have never seen it, and its loss and the uncertainty of the date when it occurred, are further evidence of the great need for efficient inventories of the churches in this Archdeaconry, wherein the loss of register books in modern times has reached proportions little short of scandalous.

The Bishops’ Transcripts supply certain years of the lost, volume. Previous to 1707 Mr. Hartopp records that there are Cossington Transcripts at Lincoln for 1604 and 1606-9, and at Leicester for the years 1561-2, 1594-5, 1612, 1617, 1621, 1622, 1625 to 1630, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1639, 1660 to 1663, 1673 to 1675, 1677, 1678, 1680, 1683 to 1685, 1687, 1690, 1691, 1693 to 1696, and 1700.

The Marriages here printed are contained in the following three volumes :—

Volume I., which consists of 21 paper leaves measuring 15 inches by 9¾ inches, with thick paper cover. This book contains ten leaves of Marriage Registers from July 22nd, 1754, to January 25th, 1802, inclusive. The remainder of the book is a Register of Banns of Marriage from 1754 to 1802.

Volume II. is also on paper, 50 leaves, size 15¼ inches by 9¾ inches, bound with leather back and corners. Only three leaves filled with Marriage Registers, from November 23rd, 1802, to July 28th, 1812 inclusive. The remaining leaves unused.

Volume III. is also on paper, 100 leaves, size 15½ inches by 10 inches. bound in white vellum, tied with four strings. Only 18 leaves are filled with Marriage Registers, from August 16th, 1813, to Aug. 28th, 1837. The remainder unused.

These abstracts of Marriages have been made by Miss Dora Stubbs and are now printed under her supervision by permission of the Rev. Newton Mant, the late Rector.

Phillimore's Marriages - Grimston 1635 to 1837

There are earlier Transcripts at Leicester for this parish for the years 1633 and 1634, but the existing Registers do not begin until 1635. The three oldest volumes are the following :—

Volume I., consisting of 33 leaves of parchment all measuring about 11 inches by 7 inches, except the penulimate leaf, which is a mere slip, the full width but only 3¼ inches deep. The volume is stitched into a limp parchment cover, dark brown with age and dirt, and contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1635 to 1703.

Volume II, bound in parchment covered boards, contains 31 parchment leaves measuring 13 inches by 7½ inches, and containing Baptisms and Burials from 1703 to 1794 and Marriages to 1753. On a paper fly-leaf at the end are entered two Baptisms and three Burials for the year 1808, but all are also entered in their proper place in the next volume.

Volume III , in millboard with a leather back, contains 20 parchment leaves measuring 15½ inches by 6 inches, but all are blank except the first five, which contain Baptisms and Burials from 1794 to 1812.

The remaining volumes are of the usual type, the one containing Marriages from 1754 to 1872, being of paper, folio size, bound in rough calf, and lying loose within it. the register “bill,” or transcript on parchment, for the year 1800, signed by the Curate and Churchwardens, but evidently never handed in at the Visitation.

There are no Marriages entered from 1641 to 1644 inclusive, and no Burials for 1642 to 1645 inclusive, and no entries of any kind for the year 1643, but there is one christening “in 1642, three in 1644 and four in 1645. The register is probably more or less deficient during these years of Civil War and after 1647 it ceases altogether until the advent of Samuel Wattes, the Parliamentary Lay Registrar, in 1654, after which date the register is complete again. The baptisms of Thomas and John, the sons of Thomas Adcock, in 1648 and 1649 have been afterwards inserted in another hand.]

Phillimore's Marriages - Wartnaby 1633 to 1838

The existing registers of Wartnaby do not begin until 1633, but there are Transcripts for the years 1604 and 1607 at Lincoln. The Marriages previous to 1837 are contained in the following volumes :—

Volume I., consisting of 18 leaves of parchment, measuring about 14 inches by 8 inches, bound in parchment covered boards, contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1633 to 1812, and of Marriages from 1633 to 1753. This volume appears to be a copy of an earlier volume. Though dating from 1633 there is no hand writing in it earlier than the second half of the eighteenth century. The first page is headed “A Coppy of the Births, Marriages and. Burials from ye year 1633, corrected and Registered anew by order of ye Reverend Mr Cant by me, J.B” The burial of the Rev. William Cant, vicar of the parish is entered on 20 February, 1763, and of “the Rev. John Cant, clerk, one of His Majesty’s Justices. of the Peace” is recorded on 9 February, 1781, and that of his widow, Ann, on 17 September, 1794. The family of Cant appears to have been resident here for several generations, entries of the name occurring from 1656 onwards. A family of the same name as the place occurs right through the register, but for the most part they seem to have been in very humble circumstances, even being described as “paupers” in their burial entries, though “Mr Robert Wartnaby of Melton, Gent.,” was buried 22 March, 1805. On 13 February, 1660, is recorded the baptism of “Ann Maria, daughter of the Right Honourabie Nicolas, Earl of Banbury by Ann, Countes[s] of Banbury, his wife,” she “was born February ye 9th at 12 of the Clock at Night.” There are also several entries of the families of Waring and Berridge. The former occur more largely in Eastwell registers, a few miles away.

Volume II. of printed forms on paper, bound in rough calf, many leaves loose, contains Marriages, 1754 to 1812.

Volume III. contains Marriages between 1812 and 1838.

Phillimore's Marriages - Eastwell 1588 to 1837

The Parliamentary Return of 1831 states that Eastwell Registers do not begin until 1719. A goodly portion of an earlier volume is now, however, preserved with the later Registers. This portion consists of 18 whole leaves of parchment, measuring 14 ½ by 5½ inches, and half, or rather more, of three other leaves. These leaves are loose, and without the protection of a cover. The first page of the first leaf is headed “The Register for the towne of Eastwell from the yeare of our Lord 1588 the thirtye yeare of o[ur] Lady Eliz.” Though headed 1588, the first entry, the baptism of Henry, son of William Portman, is for 9 June, 1586, after which, however, the further entries begin regularly with the baptism of Katherine, daughter of the same William Portman, 4 Nov., 1588. The entries for the year 1609 are cut away and the leaves of the Register for the years 1640-1647, and 1659~1685 inclusive, and all after 1692 are missing. Of these missing Periods there is a transcript at Lincoln for the year 1609, and transcripts at Leicesler for 166o to 1663, 1665 to 1670, 1672 to 1681, 1684 and 1685, and 1695 to 1700, besides, probably, most of the 19 years at the beginning of the 18th century. It would, therefore, be possible to recover nearly all the information missing from the mutilated volume. The years 1640-1647, the stormy period of the Civil War, would be the greatest gap.

This volume records the election of Thomas Healy, husbandman, as the lay register on 23 January, 1653, and the induction of Christopher Wright as Rector in January 1655. There are some entries of the Waring family.

Volume II contains Marriages from 1719 to 1753.

Volume III. contains Marriages from 1754 to 1812.

Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.

Phillimore's Marriages - Queniborough 1562 to 1837

These Marriages at Queniborough are contained in 7 volumes. The earliest Register begins with and contains Baptisms from 1561 to 1604, Marriages from 1562 to 1600, and Burials from 1562 to 1601, after 1601 several years of Burials are illegible. It is a parchment Book of 10 leaves including covers, which are also used. It measures 12 inches by 9 inches.

Volume II. is a quarto paper book of 18 leaves and contains Baptisms and Burials from 1680 to 1709, and Marriages from 1696 to 1709 only. Unfortunately it is in a very dilapidated and loose condition. The Marriages were all entered on two leaves of the book, one of these is missing containing the marriages from 1680 to 1696. These two volumes are not mentioned in the Parliamentary Return of 1831. There appears to be a volume missing, as there are no entries to be found between 1604 and 1680. Of this missing period there are transcripts at Lincoln for the years 1604 and 1606, and at Leicester for 1617, 1622, 1624~9, 1632-4, 1636-9, and 1673-80.

Volume III. is a parchment book of 14 leaves measuring 12½ inches by 8 inches, and contains mixed entries of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1710 to 1748, it is bound in parchment boards.

Volume IV., also of parchment, 15 leaves. It contains Baptisms and Burials from 1748 to 1796, and Marriages from 1748 to 1754 only. It is in parchment covers.

Volume V., a parchment book of 24 leaves with ruled lines. It contains Banns and Marriages only from 1754 to 1781. It is in paper covers.

Volume VI., a book of printed forms, contains Marringes only from 1781 to 1812.

Volume VII, also of printed forms, contains Marriages only from 1813 to 1836.
