Phillimore's Marriages - Wigston Magna 1567 to 1837

Volume 1. is an especially interesting record, and in one respect it must surely be unique, as its heading indicates; it was faded and rubbed to illegibility, but restored reads thus :—

“The Regester book of Wigeston magna [conteyninge?] all the wedings [Christenings?] and burieings which Mr. Thomas Thorneton the vicare coulde finde at his coming booth in the parish and in the Office at Leicester Willm. Cootes [?] beinge Regester who had xx’ for his Search of Mr. Thorneton And first these wch have ben solemnized in this parish from the 29 of September Ano Dni 1567 unto the 29 of September Ano Dni 1568 [blotted) put into a paper booke there according to the Iniu[n]ctions & now faythfully copied into this parchment book Regia authoritate Ano Regni Elizabethe 40.”

From this and from another heading (infra) it appears that this most excellent “Vicare” took the trouble and bore the considerable expense of collecting all the entries he could find, not only in the parish but also from the Bishops’ Transcripts, for ten years anterior to his coming. This should have earned the parishioners great gratitude, but see below.

On page 2 is the heading, repeated on several subsequent pages, “A true inventory of all the wedinges, christenings and buriales made in great wigeston in the yeare of our Lord 1571 after the entries is generally, “finis huius anni.” Each page, for some time, is “Examined and found True” by Vicar and Churchwardens.

In the year 1577, after the usual heading, is the addition, “and in the first yeare of Thomas Thorneton vicare, wch was sory to see the mystery of iniquitie to have wrought so mightely in moseling of this minister by takinge away his Mayntenance.” That was his reward for exceptional care in perfecting his parish records. He was buried 18 Dec. 1624.

After 1655 one page is blank, then comes this heading :—

“A new Regester booke made in the yeare of our Lord one thousand six hundered and ffyfty five made and provided according to the true intent and [?meaning] of that Act which was set forth in the yeare of our Lord one thousand six hundred ffyfty three, September the twenty ninth according to the true intent and meaning of the said Act for this case prouided that is to say of all the Marriges, Birthdayes, Baptizing [sic] and Burialls which weare in the parish of Wigston Magna By me Micael Bonsaw Register of the same Towne and parrish truly taken set down and recorded in this same Register Booke.”

“I doe approve of this booke for the Recordinge of Marriages Birthes & Burialls as abouesaid Tho. Beaumont.”

The Civil Marriages are recorded with much unnecessary verbiage, one specimen is given in full.

The volume consists of 92 parchment leaves measuring 11 3/8 to 11 5/8 inches, by 7½ inches, varying much, it has been some long time rebound in parchment boards, but was evidently long without covers and is badly thumbed, large pieces, carrying portions of entries, being worn quite away. All classes of entries from 1567 to 1687 are recorded. The last ten, and particularly the last four leaves, are smaller than the rest, irregular in shape and some have been trimmed. One Marriage in 1655 occurs in the middle of the entries for 1657. In 1658 a modern hand has substituted ‘1657.’ Some entries in 1678-79 come after those in 1680. Close, irregular writing, very often poor, faded ink, and many pages rubbed make it a difficult Register to search and read; otherwise it is in quite fair order. The capital letters in this volume are peculiar to the writer and very puzzling.

In 1601 appears the certificate (often found) :— “ Ex’ted in visitac[ione] triennal [?] tent ap[ud] Leicester 23° (blank) Dom 1601, W. Styroppe.”

In this year is this entry :- “Infantula quaedam peregrina preforibus Edwardi Paylton Pictoris nocturne tempore post festum Omnium Sanctorum proxime sequente, a parentibus aut ab aliis quibusdam, contra naturam et eum senno eius vitoe periculo, inhumanissime deposita, et eleemosinis parochiarum relicta, sex dentales tantomodo habens, cuius nomen prorsies [?] ignoramus, more Christiano sepulta fuit 23° die Decembris,”

Volume II. “Wigsfon Register Book from 1688 to 1756” appears alone on page 2, page 1 is blank. On page 3 is, “A new and perfect Inventory of all the Marriges, Christenings, and Buryals that have been in the Parish of Great Wigston in the yeare of our Lorde 1688.” 56 parchment leaves measuring about 13¼ by nearly 7 inches, varying as usual, two blank paper flyleaves at each end; binding parchment boards, in good order. The writing is regular, and generally very good and legible, but has faded badly in many places.

Recorded herein are Marriages, 1688-1754, Baptisms and Burials 1688-1756. In 1707 to 1740 is a long list of Dissenters “Omnia Generu: Born since my coming. E. J[olly vicar].”

In 1710 “Ellen the wife of Tho Taylor vulgo vocat :Singing Tom was Buryed May 9.”

Someone, presumably one of the vicars, has altered the old style to the, new from 1740-54, drawing lines across and putting new “years” to make them begin in January instead of March; a most mischievous deed.

Volume IX. (numbered 4) Baptisms and Burials 1757-1805, also Marriages in 1762 and 1766 (no dates), parchmcnrt leaves in boards.

In this Volume under 1777 is the “Memorandum The farther Register of this years Burials and Baptisms was stolen out of the Chest in the Vestry and the Names above written (comparatively few) were all that, the respective Parents, Relations and Friends gave in afterwards tho’ Proclamation of the Loss was made in the Church by me twice. J. Pigott Vicar.”

Volume X. (numbered 7), Baptisms and Burials, 1806-12, parchment leaves in, boards, only seven leaves and two pages used And later volumes.

All, the above, except as mentioned, are in good order.

The Bishops’ Transcripts exist in Leicester (marked * at Lincoln) for the years 1565-6 (so the “search” was not quite as successful as it might have been) 1582-3, ‘89-90, ‘92-3, 1604*, 1606*, 1607*, ‘12, ‘13, ‘17, ’21, ‘23-4, ‘25 to ‘29, ‘32 to ‘34, ‘36 to ‘39, ‘61 to ‘67, ‘69, ‘71, ‘73 to ‘84, ‘86 to ‘88, ‘90 to’94, ‘97 to’ 1700.
