What is now the first volume of Sileby Registers appears to be composed of three parchment volumes stitched together, consisting respectively of 27 leaves of parchment measuring 14¼ by 5½ inches, 19 uneven leaves about 13¼ by 6inches, and 21 leaves 14¼ by 6 inches, besides one of the outer covers of the first portion occurring between it and the second. Until the present year (1912) this bundle of volumes was loosely stitched together, unprotected by covers and more or less to pieces, while the last leaf, containing the memorandum of appointment of George Barrodell as Parliamentarian “Register,” 21 Nov., 1653, was torn in half and the loose half taken away from the volume altogether. At the instance of the Vicar, the Rev. F. L. Burrow, and under the supervision of Mr. T. M. Blagg the whole volume has now been cleaned, restored and bound by a competent binder in stout bevelled vellum boards, properly lettered. If more Leicestershire parishes would follow this commendable example we should not have to deplore so frequently the loss or damage of early volumes and parts of volumes of the ancient parish registers of this county.
The whole volume as it now stands contains entries of Baptisms and Marriages from 1568 to 1656 and Burials from 1568 to 1654.
From 1568 to 1604 the entries are “fair-copied” in the hand of Thomas Chamberlaine, the Vicar, and while the years 1568 to 1592 are reckoned, as usual, as beginning on the Feast of the Annunciation (25th March), from October, 1592, to October, 1599 they are reckoned from Michaelmas to Michaelmas; and from 23rd March, 1600, to the spring of 1604 they run from Easter Day to Easter Day. With the succession of Thomas Bertram as vicar in the latter year a return was made to the normal method of reckoning 25th March, Lady Day, as New Year’s Day. In consulting the abstracts here printed these variations of dating should be borne in mind.
The first page of this volume bears memoranda of the inductions of Richard Peirce, B.A., in 29 Eliz: and Anthony Berridge, M.A., 15 Chas I., and the following ill-spelt couplet in an illiterate hand:
“If man[’s] life wold last as long as Age induer Then man wold think his Life was sekuer,”
and this interesting note:
“Memorandum that John Morton the ellder did take away three Comman backes from the inhabetants of Scilbee that did Shut downe in to Barow Bruke, and the head land that is Called sent mares head land [St Mary’s headland] that the buttes stands on & was coman & part of the lane thare, hee would have a’ had it all but I did prevent him, & half of the Coman partt & Becerse there is a coman backe shut in nere to hande he’ll nere the lane that ..... in Morton[’s] Close.”
Volume II. does not begin until 1683, leaving a blank of nearly 30. years. It contains Marriages from 1683 to 1714, besides Baptisms and Burials.
Volume III. 32 leaves of parchment measuring 15 by 9 inches. Contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, the Marriages running from 1715 to 1754.
Volume IV. contains Marriages, 1754 to 1810.
Volume V. contains Marriages, 1810 to 1812.
Volume VI. contains Marriages 1813 to 1837.
Transcripts for the following missing years exist at Leicester: 1563, 1659 to 1669, 1673, 1675 to 1680, and 1682. The Marriages from these have been copied by Mr. Hartopp and are here printed in italic type.
The Marriages here printed have been abstracted, from 1568 to 1714 by Mr. T. M. Blagg, and from 17i5 to 1837 by the Rev. F. L. Burrow, Vicar of Sileby, by whose permission they are now printed.

To this name, Thomas Chamberlaine, the rector, who copied out this portion of the Register from an earlier original in 1604, has written “my father.” Modwin was evidently William Chamberlaine’s second wife, for to the entry of the burial of Elizabeth Chamberlaine the wife of William Chamberlaine, on 10 Dec., 1573, the rector has added” my deere mother.” This first wife was apparently a Barradale by birth because to the burial entry of Thomas Baradale, yeoman, on 22 Apr.,1577, is added “my grandsire.” “Mudden” Chamberlaine, the wife of Wm. Chamberlaine, was buried 24 Apr., 1583, and the old man was married for the third time to Eliz: Allin on 14 Nov. in the same year, as appears in the entry below.
