The marriages in these registers are contained in four volumes.
Volume I. consists of 29 leaves, 27 being parchment and two paper, measuring 11¼ ins. by 6¾ ins., stitched in paper boards and containing entries as follows:—
The first 15 leaves are of parchment of which 1 to 10 contain Baptisms, 1562-1667; 11to 13, Marriages, 1563-1676. The 14th leaf bears Marriages, 1678-1692, and Baptisms, 1669-1673. Leaf 15 has Baptisms, 1674-1680. Leaves 16 and 17 are of paper and contain Baptisms, 1680—1695. The remaining leaves are parchment, leaves 18 to 27 containing Burials, 1562-1695; leaf 28 a copy of the Parliamentary Articles of Constitution of 1653, and No. 29 sundry Briefs, etc. The entries previous to the year 1600 are copied from an earlier register, in accordance with the Canon.
At either end of this volume are four narrow leaves of paper, those at the beginning containing the names of the Churchwardens from 1663 to 1699 and a list of Rectors, and those at the end have accounts of the sums collected by church briefs from 1681 to 1692.
This volume is remarkable for the large number of notes it contains, chiefly remarks on the personality of the various people baptised or buried, such as “a verie old & poore cottager,” “an antient widow,” etc.; but also some of more general interest, such as a note to the effect that “Belvoir towne” was burnt down 5 Nov., 1644, “being the gunpowder treason day”; notices of the memorable sea-fights with the Dutch in June, 1652, and June, 1665, in the latter of which it records that their Admiral, Opdam, was killed, and 23 ships burnt, sunk, or taken, while we lost the Earls of Marlborough, Portland, and Falmouth; Lord Muskerry and Mr. Robt. Boyle, second son of the Earl of Cork. In 1666 the Register has a note on the Great Fire of London. A strong colony of “Anabaptists” flourished in this parish in the 17th and 18th centuries and many entries relate to them, of which the following piece of grim humour is a characteristic example: “John Joanes, a Welshman, sojourner, being an Anabaptist, was permitted, not being excommunicate, to be laid in the churchyard by his owne associates, whose grave flowed so with water that his corps were covered with itt. So that he was twice dipt” (29 Apr. 1663). In 1694-5 is a note concerning the font. “Thomas the son of Jonathan Waite & Alice his wife was baptized Feb. the 14th (being then — months old & his mother then churched) & was the first baptized in the bason provided by Dan: Walton to be set in the Font as an Appurtenance thereunto.” Among the numerous other entries of interest we have only space for the following, which we give as examples of many similar :—
1643, “Robert Stan[n]y, a souldier, com[m}only called blew Robbin, who was stabbd, was buryed August the first.”
1644, “Zacharie Parkar of Croxton, a blacksmith, being slaine by a drunken souldier, was buryed November the 30.”
1666,“Edward Atwood, yeoman, & the Earle of Rutland’s Bayliffe for Knipt[onl & one of his Com[m]ission[er]s was buryed out of the Hall house of Knipton Decemb : the 7.”
1667, “A Beggarwoman who with her husband (whose name was Harrison, a pretended seaman) was travelling from Cumberland to Harwitch in Essex, dyed in Child-bed in Wm. Clark’s barne & was buryed Dec. the 5, & her husband runing away her child (named Thomas) was left to the parish.”
1685—6, “Francis Templeman, an antient Farmer & Inhabitant in this Parish, but an Anabaptist & Excom[mlunicate was p[er]mitted to be buryed in the churchyard, March the 9th”
Volume II. consists of 25 leaves of parchment and a last leaf of cover, the front cover having been cut off. The leaves measure about 13½ ins by 7 ins. This volume contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1696 to 1783 inclusive, and Marriages from 1696 to 1753. There are also records for many consecutive years of Bibles given away.
Volume III. Folio size, of paper, bound in parchment boards, contains Marriages from 1754 to 1812.
Volume IV., a similar book, has Marriages for the period 1813 to 1837.
These Marriages have been abstracted and the registers described by Mr. T. M. Blagg, and are now printed under his supervision by permission of the Rev. M. W. J. Bruce, Rector of Knipton.
