The earliest Register here begins with the burial of Mr. Robert Bridges, Rector, the last day of March, 1662 ; then follow Baptisms and one Marriage the same year. The entries from 1662 to 1719 occupy 25 leaves of parchment, measuring 12 inches by 6 inches, being closely written. The ink is faded, and the greater part of the entries for 1694—5 are undecipherable. The bottom part of pages 41 and 42, containing the year 1703 and part of the years 1704 and l705, is cut away. But by the kindness of the late Mr. A. P. Moore, in allowing the Transcripts in his charge to be copied, the transcriber has been enabled to complete the missing portions, except the year 1703, for which there is no transcript. Ihe Rev. Philip Hackett, who was Rector here 1770 to 1801, was a contributor to Nichols’ History of the County. Concerning these Registers he writes, “In 1713, upon a litigation about a Chief Farm to which was annexed the Manor of the Upper Lordship, the old Regester comprehending all entries before 1662 was not, forthcoming and could not be discovered. It is supposed the Clerk of that time, who was called the Doctor, was tampered with, and gave up to the Flames the book of which he had been in possession just before. He sold a pot of beer, on which any person might have access to a Regester. The next Regester has been also mutilated in a very material part.” It is bound in stiff paper boards.
Volume II. consists of 14 leaves of parchment measuring 11½ inches by 7½ inches. It contains Marriages from 1719 to 1733 only, Baptisms and Burials 1719 to 1770. It is bound in parchment boards.
Volume III, is a folio book of printed forms, containing Banns and Marriages, 1754 to 1812.
Volume IV. The usual folio book in parchment covers, contains Marriages only, 1813 to 1837.
Though South Croxton registers previous to 1662 have long been lost there are transcripts at Lincoln for the years 1604, 1606, 1608 and 1609, and at Leicester for 1561, 1576, 1578-9, 1582-3, 1612, 1617, 1621, 1622, 1625-9, 1632-4 and 1637-8.
