Phillimore's Marriages - Thurnby cum Bushby 1564 to 1837

The Registers of Thurnby are remarkable for their early commencement, the first entry is, “The daye of the baptisme of the sonne of Thomas Atkin the 2nd daye of November 1538.” This is elaborate but unsatisfactory, in as much as the child’s name is omitted!

The Registers are in good order, generally speaking. The first Volume consists of 31 parchment leaves measuring 12½ in. to nearly 12 7/8 in. by nearly 5 5/8 in. bound in thick paper. The contents are Baptisms and Burials from 1538 to 1675; Marriages 1564 to 1672, early ones must have been omitted. There are no entries whatever for 1539, 1554-7, 1559-61 all inclusive. No Marriages are registered for 1570-2, 1578-80, 1582-4, 1588-90, 1592-4, 1605-6, 1624-6, 1673-80, 1686-9, 1696-7, 1708-11, 1722-4, 1748-9, 1774-5, 1793-9, 1813-4. This is a transcript of an earlier book to 1603. Entries are all classes mixed down to 1636 when Samson Davenport, vicar, began to classify them separately, first Baptisms and Marriages and, four pages later, Burials, but this was soon dropped. After 1642 entries are most erratic as to year until 1656, earlier and later years being mixed anyhow, the handwriting also varies greatly. The condition of the book, except for some pages stained and thumbed, and some small tears, is good. The writing is nearly all good, generally very good and legible except a few entries. Three leaves have apparently been cut out of middle of book (probably used for the annual “Register Bills “or Transcripts), but no gap in the entries occurs there.

Volume II. consists of 15 parchment leaves of irregular sizes, 12½ in. to 12 5/8 in. by 5¾ in. to 6¼ in. in paper binding matching Volume I. It contains all classes of entries from 1675 to 1722. There are no Marriage entries in 1673-80 inclusive.

On the first page of leaf 11 are six entries inverted, one is :—

“August 17, 1702. Joseph Veary of Bushby (a fanatic dissenter) did then inform me that his child which he calls Elizabeth was born the first day of June last.” There are two similar entries of other children of the same father, also burials of the two last, then the entry of birth of another son, Joseph.

This volume is inferior in every way to Volume I. It is badly kept in very various writing, generally bad, the later pages the worst of “parish-clerkly” script. Poor ink has caused many entries to fade, a few hopelessly. There must have been many omissions. One leaf is partly cut out, one page contains only three marriage entries. General condition is fair.

Volume III. All classes of entries classified, 1722-41. Nine parchment leaves about 14½ in. by 9 in. in parchment boards, in excellent condition. All entries are in the bold, clear writing of Jarvis Bradgate, vicar, and easy to read.

Volume IV. Mixed entries, all classes, 1744-75, so the records of three years are missing. No leaves appear to have been cut out at beginning, but six or more have been at end. Nine parchment leaves measuring 14¼ in. by 6 7/8 in. At end two odd leaves are loosely attached, one 13 5/8 in. by 5 7/8 in. the other about 12 5/8 in. by about 5¾ in. Binding, parchment boards. Writing mostly clear and good, and very legible. Condition quite good.

Volume V. Baptisms and Bnrials only, 1776-1812. Nine parchment leaves, three measure nearly 14 5/8 in. by 9¼ in., then four are sewn in, thicker and of different quality, two of which measure 12 7/8 in. by 9 1/8 in., one measures 11 in. by about 9 1/8 in., and the other 6 in. by 9 7/8 in., then two 14½ in. by 9¼ in. Five leaves contain Baptisms, four Burials which are at end, inverted. The Vicar, William Newton’s writing is “copperplate,” the rest mostly “parish clerk,” all legible. Stiff paper covers, good condition.

Volume VI. Marriages, 1757-1812. The usual printed forms.

Volume VII. Marriages, 1815-36. Gap of two years between

Volumes VI. and VII. Printed forms.

Volume VIII. Marriages, 1837 (none) to present time, on printed forms.

The Bishop’s Transcripts of the Thurnby Registers in the Archdeacons Registry, 29, Friar Lime, Leicester (those marked * are at Lincoln), exist for the following years :—1563-4, 1574-5, 1581-2-3-4, ,1604*, 1606*, 1607*, 1609*, 1612-13-17-21-22-26-29-32-34, 1636 38-60-67-72-74-75-77 to 87, 1693-95-99.

These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott, of Leicester, and the Vicar, the Rev. William Seaver, by whose permission they are here printed.

Herein T. means Thurnby ; B., Bushby.
