The following is a description of the earlier volumes of Somerby Registers:
Vol. I, which extends from 1601 to 1715, is now preserved in the British Museum (Add. MSS., 24,802). It was purchased in April, 1862, from C. Devon, Esq., but how it came into his possession does not appear. It has only 13 leaves, and contains entries of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, only for the years 1601 to 1603, 1627, 1631 to 1640, 1643, 1712 to 1715. Two of the missing leaves, of parchment, dilapidated and mostly illegible, containing entries for 1707 to 1709, and memoranda of 1669 and 1671, were mysteriously recovered in 1906, and are now in the possession of the Vicar of Somerby; size of page, 13 ins, by 5½. The eighteenth century entries are in many cases written over and amongst the seventeenth century entries, the book having been badly kept. A transcription of this Register was made by the Rev. W. G. Dimock Fletcher, of Oxford, and was printed in the Transactions of the Leicestershire Architectural and Archeological Society, vol. 5, parts 3 and 4 (1881 and 1882). The entries are there given in chronological order. Many of the original entries were so faded and illegible that it was found impossible to transcribe them. Copies of the above Transactions were obtained a few years ago, and are jealously preserved along with the other Registers in Somerby Church. Thus, in a way, Somerby has its own again.
Vol. II contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1716 to 1751. After being absent from its proper place and custody for possibly a hundred years, it mysteriously came into the hands of the Vicar of Somerby on Feb. 16th, 1906, being sent anonymously from the Upper Baker Street Post Office, London, N.W. (see Daily Mail, Feb. 22nd, 1906). Inside the volume were the two loose leaves of the Brit. Mus. Register already referred to. These two Registers obviously were lost before 1831, for the Parish Register abstract of that year states that the Somerby Registers commence at 1751 ; most probably they were lost before 1813, when the Church safe was bought. The newly-found Register is in excellent condition, and on the whole was well kept. It is of parchment leaves in parchment boards, and measures 15 ins, by 8¼. On the outside of the cover is the following :—

Vol. III extends from 1751 to 1793 for Baptisms and Burials, but only to the end of 1754 (“none“) for Marriages. It is of parchment leaves in parchment boards, and measures 14 ins, by 7¾, and is in fairly good condition. The entries are by many different hands, some educated, others ill-spelt and illiterate.
Vol. IV. Marriages, 1755-1812, is the usual book of forms. These Marriages have been transcribed by the Rev. G. E. Britten, Vicar of Somerby, and are now printed under his supervision.
