Saxelbye is a small parish N.W. of and near Melton Mowbray. It has a hamlet formerly called Sholeby or Sholby, but now Shoby, though the parish of Grimston intervenes, geographically, between the hamlet and the mother parish. The first volume of the Registers is early, interesting and important. It contains 25 parchment leaves of various sizes, 14 3/8-3/4 by 5 5/8-3/4 to 6½ in., and one leaf all cut away but a fragment 3¾ by 5¾ containing a memorandum as to distribution of a legacy of £10 from Matthew Noble, of Wartnaby, to the poor of S. in 1672. The binding is limp parchment, much wrinkled and injured by damp. Condition fair, but badly needs repairing and binding, some leaves are quite loose. The writing is generally good and legible, but many entries are badly faded.
The contents are Baptisms and Burials from 1538 to 1691, and Marriages from 1555 to 1690. The portion which is a transcript of an earlier book comprises Baptisms to 1595, Marriages to 1601, and Burials to 1595. One side of leaf 6 is almost blank, no “entries”; leaf 7 is quite blank both sides. There are no Marriages registered in 1644-51, nor in 1691-1754. In 1680 occurs this :—“Viri vere sinceri vitoeque integerrimi Mri Roberti Kirkby hujus ecciesiae annorum viginti spatio pastoris pientissimi
Anima ) (Coelo ) (28)
In occluditur dic. Augusti.
Corpus ) (Solo) (30)
Vol. II., containing Baptisms and Burials from 1690 to 1806, and Marriages 1690-1754 is missing, though it was extant in 1831, when it is fully recorded in the Parliamentary Return. The present vicar has held the living 33 years, and has no knowledge of the missing volume, and is much concerned at the hiatus.
Vol. III., Marriages 1755 to 1812. Paper leaves bound in tooled calf; printed forms; in good order.
Vol. IV. Parchment leaves in parchment boards. Only about 2pp. full of entries, Baptisms and Burials 1807-12 ; the rest quite blank.
Vol. V Marriages 1813-37. Printed forms.
The Bishops’ Transcripts exist for the following years (marked * at Lincoln):—1561-78-9-87-8, 1604*, ‘7 to ‘9*, ‘12-16-17-22, 162 to ‘29, ‘32 to ‘34, ‘37 to ‘39, ‘60 to ‘67, ‘72 to ‘80, ‘84 to ‘87, 1690 to ‘97, 1700.
These abstracts have been made by Mr. E. K. Elliott, of Leicester, and the Rector, the Rev. F. Murray Symonds, by whose permission they are here printed.
Begun the 29th Harry Eighth the year before the Bible was printed, order’d to be set up in Churches in English.”
