Properly spelt Claxton, the name of this village, a large one of over 700 inhabitants, is now spelt as pronounced ; the letter “x” never being sounded in Leicestershire place-names.
The Registers here are early, fine, and exceptionally well kept.
Volume I. contains 54 parchment leaves, of which 51 measure 13 7/8 by 5 7/8-6 inches. The last three leaves measure 13¾ by 5¼, but apparently belong to the original book, the edges being trimmed before the entries were made. The fourth leaf has a piece cut out of one side, or a hole in the skin; a parchment patch cut to shape is firmly pinned over the hole, and the entries are neatly written partly on it to fit. Leaf 7 is shorter (an original defect in the skin) by about 3 in. than the rest; leaf 8 is cut 3 5/8 in. shorter than the others, but no entries seem to be missing. On a parchment leaf stitched inside the back cover various briefs are recorded. At the beginning are two paper fly-leaves. The first contains a list of briefs for “poor Protestants” and other charities; the second is blank. Binding limp parchment in good order except that about an inch has been torn off the bottom of both covers. The heading is “The register booke of all the Weddings Xponing(s) and burying(s) who have been made or donne (wi)thin the p(ar)ishe of Claxton since the xxvth day of Marche in the first yere of the Queen’s maj(esty’s) Reagne Elizabethe according to the accompt that bath bene kept there.”
This volume registers Weddings 1558-1724, Baptisms 1558-1659 and Burials 1558-1733. There seems to be no loss nor missing period of entries.
“Christenings” is always written “Xponings” or “Exponings” to 1653.
Entries are strictly classified, all the Weddings coming first. It is noteworthy that the name “Mary” is always so spelt, never “Maria” in this Register.
The writing of the transcript [Marriages to 1629] is clear, excellent and methodical; entries always headed, “Weddings Ao dni [15. .]“ and dates entered in ruled columns. It is in excellent preservation; only the first page has faded. Later writing varies much, but is generally, except a few difficult or doubtful entries, easily legible.
After the last burial Wm. Turville, vicar, writes :— “Omne capax tenet ue[?]na nomen”; also “Dico virtulem monitus; fugaces Te moneut anni. . . - I mortis memor insequo I pete fausto.” Other Latin maxims are on back of the last (inserted) leaf.
Vol. II. contains Marriages from 1725 to 1733, and Baptisms, 160o to 1733, it consists of 13 parchment leaves nearly 7½ - 5/8 by 7¾ inches ; bound in limp parchment. All the leaves are badly stained ; the first is badly faded and rubbed. Writing is poor, generally legible, but often bad. The general condition is very fair, no leaves cut, cut out or defective.
The heading is :— “Baptizings in Claxton otherwise called Clawson in the County of Lei[ceste]r in the Yeare of our Lord 1660 according to the Accompt wch hath beene there kept.”
This is another instance of an ostensibly “baptismal” Register recording Marriages also. There are no Burials in it.
Vol. III. Marriages, 1734-53; Baptisms and Burials, 1734-1812 33 parchment leaves (in parchment boards) 13¾ by nearly 6½ in. seven leaves at least cut out after the 2nd from the Marriages end. On the next is a neat table of inhabited houses, families and occupations, males, females, &c., in Clawson for 1811, 1821, 1831. Writing good and legible throughout. A few pages stained or discoloured, the 4th leaf of Burials (at end inverted) torn across, several others slightly torn ; otherwise condition is good.
