Phillimore's Marriages - Bottesford 1563 to 1812

This parish is of large extent and comprises several manors, such as Normanton, Easthorpe, Beckingthorpe, and Wimbeachthorpe. These hamlets had anciently each a separate church or chapel, whose sites are recorded by Andrew Esdaile in his Rutland Monuments,” a small and original, though illiterate history of Bottesford, written in 1819 and printed at Nottingham in 1845 (See Notts and Derbyshire Notes and Queries, 1897, p. 89.) Bottesford being itself a large village, and the parish, as stated, being of considerable extent, the population whose baptisms, marriages and burials are recorded in the Parish Registers has always been a large one and those records are bulkier than those of any corresponding country parish in the district. The Parish Registers of Bottesford possess a further importance from two facts—first, that since the destruction of Belvoir Priory, the Church of Bottesford was the burial place of the lords of Belvoir and the Registers contain a record of their interments; secondly, from the circumstance of so large a proportion of the families in the parish being yeomen of long standing, such as the Vincents, Houghs, Sumners, Calcrafts, Wrights, Breedons and many others. Some particulars concerning the gravestones of these families and their positions in the Churchyard will be found in Esdaile’s “ Rutland Monuments.” It must be remembered, in consulting Esdaile, that he is only an authority on such local facts as these, with which he was personally acquainted, and that he is not safe to quote on any other matters. For instance, he gives no authority for his statements that some families, such as the Calcrafts and Houghs, had been resident in the parish for 500 years, or that the Norris and Hoyte families settled here with Robert de Todenie, and he makes the absurd deduction that the Vincents must have been people of position in 1563 because of the excellence of the signatnre of Francis Vincent as churchwarden in that year, Whereas of course it is no signature at all, but written by Edmund Higginbothom, the parson, who copied the present register from the original one in 1597-9.

The Registers themselves, which are singularly complete and legible, are contained, so far as those previous to 1813 are concerned, in ten volumes, as follows :—

Vol. I. consists of 82 leaves of parchment measuring 15 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches and contains Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from 1563 to 1647. Its continuity is unbroken, save for the loss of a single leaf, which, however, contained little more than the entries for the year 1570. The earlier portion of this Register is, as usual, a transcript of the original Register, long since destroyed, and which would probably be a paper volume. This copy was made in 1597-9, as appears by a marginal note in the Register. From 1633 to 1647 time Register has been kept in duplicate, the entries for this period occurring also in Vol. II, though with many differences of spelling and with less particulars as to vocation, &c. (see note in present transcript). Both Vols. I. and II. have, for this period, been entered up from some original register or rough note-book, the entries being closely and neatly written and arranged under classes, and numbered for each year.

Vol. II. is of paper, the edges much frayed, and contains entries of all classes from 1633 to 1672. It probably at one time began at an earlier date, but the first leaves are missing. It is stitched into a portion of a double-columned Latin MS. on parchment, with rubricated initial letters.

Vol. III. consists of 33 leaves of parchment, measuring 13 1/2 by 6 inches, bound in a parchment cover. It contains all classes of entries from 1675 to 1697.

Vol. IV. is of parchment, measuring 16 1/4 by 7 inches, bound in parchment boards, amid containing entries of all classes from 1698 to 1721.

Vol. V. is also of parchment, the leaves measuring 12 1/2 by 8 inches, and containing entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1722 to 1773 and of Marriages from 1722 to 1755.

Vol. VI. is a paper book of printed forms containing Marriages
from 1754 to 1812.

Vol. VII. is a folio volume of parchment leaves bound in rough calf, and contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1775 to 1811.

Vol. VIII. is a small folio of parchment, bound in parchment boards. It contains Baptisms for 1812 and many copies of terriers, memoranda relating to charities, &c.

Vol. IX. is a small parchment folio like Vol. VIII., containing Burials for 1812, which, however, only occupy one page, all the remaining leaves being blank sheets of parchment.

Vol. X. is a folio paper book of printed forms, bound in rough calf and containing two marriages in 1812, the rest of the volume being blank.

These marriages have been extracted by Mr. T. M. Blagg and are now printed under his supervision by permission of the Rev. Canon W. Vincent-Jackson, the Rector of Bottesford.

[A note at the bottom of the page says that this will was copied out of “an old paper booke belonginge to the Churche, and wrytten the last day of November, 1602,” by Edmund Higginbottom, curate.]

Over the leaf occurs the following memorandum :—

“That Robert Jease a yong man of Susterne on the 3d day of September Aö. Din. 1610, ascending to the top of the steeple in Bottesfford by the crotches did fetch downe the weathercocke to have the foote amended, and, being mended, did yt up againe the same day, and had for his labour 3s. 6d.”

Volume II.

[From this date the Marriages have been transcribed from Vol. II. of the Register, which is the original paper book, and therefore should, chronologically, have precedence of Vol. 1. Though Vol. I. contains a fair copy of the whole Register down to 1647 the accuracy of the transcript is not equal to the beauty of its caligraphy. In the surnames of the first four women in 1633 alone, are four grave mistakes, Sneath appearing as "Sneafe," Stokes as "Sokes," and Hopkinson as "Hopekines." How many similar mistakes occur in the preceding pages of this present printed copy it is, of course, impossible now to say, as that portion of the original paper Register previous to 1633 is missing. In those places where the dates or other portions of the entries, owing to the tattered and dilapidated state of the leaves, are wanting in the paper book, the missing parts are supplied from the parchment transcript in Vol. I.]
