Previous to 1813, the Registers of this parish are contained in three Volumes, in a fair state of preservation.
Vol. I. consists of thirty-one leaves of parchment, measuring 15 by 6 inches, and neatly bound in vellum boards. It contains entries of Baptisms from 1575 to 1726, Marriages and Burials, 1559 to 1727. The earlier portion of this Register is a well written transcript made in 1599 (Edward Inkersall being then Vicar), from an older book, long since lost. From an entry, it Appears that a parishioner named Valentine Goodman, was appointed “Parish Register,” or Registrar, as we should now say, in accordance with Cromwell’s Act, and sworn to his office 15 February, 1653, before William Hartopp, of Little Dalby, a Justice of the Peace. No Marriages are recorded in this Volume for the period of the Commonwealth, but it is known that Mr. “Justice” Hartopp performed many Civil Marriages both here, at Melton Mowbray, and other parishes in the vicinity. At the end of this Volume are several entries of briefs or special collections made for various purposes ; also a list of the inhabitants of Little Dalby, who were assessed towards the double subsidy in August, 1628.
Vol. II. consists of twenty leaves, chiefly of parchment, measuring 11 1/3 by 7½ inches, and bound in parchment boards. This contains entries of Baptisms, 1727 to 1783, Marriages, 1727 to 1754, and Burials, 1727 to 1782, chiefly in the handwritings of the Rev. Samuel Kerchevall and the Rev. Wm. Hartopp, successively Vicars of the parish.
Vol, III., a book of printed forms, the paper leaves measuring 15 1/3 by 10 inches, eight used, rest blank. This Volume, bound in rough calf contains entries of Baptisms, 1784 to 1812. Marriages, 1754 to 1812, and Burials, 1783 to 1812 ; much of it is in the handwriting of the Rev. Samuel Hartopp, LL. B., who was Vicar of the parish for over half a century. Unfortunately, several leaves in this Volume are torn, but otherwise it is complete.
At the request of Capt. J. Burns—Hartopp, and with the permission of the Rev. R. C. Dashwood, Vicar of the parish, the Marriage entries which follow, 302 in number, have been extracted by Mr. Henry Hartopp, of Leicester, and are printed under his Supervision.
