Volume I. comprises forty-two parchment leaves, measuring 13½ inches by 5¼ inches, stitched together; with four loose leaves (two apparently at the beginning and two at the end) forming covers and fly-leaves, also a fragment of a fifth leaf at the beginning. The two leaves at the end are quite loose; those at the beginning partially loose.
The period included ranges from 1571 to 1653. On the initial fly-leaf occurs the following title or table of contents, partly illegible: “.... names of them that was baptised wedded and buried ... the XXXth day of November the yeare of our Lord God a thousand five hundred and fifty-nine, the fyrst yeare of the Raygne of our most dread [soveraigne] lady Elizabeth of England France and Ireland queene. Anno Dni M.CCCCC.LIX. Elizabethae primo.” This is a very difficult register to read, the writing is bad and often faded.
The entries for the first twelve years, 1559 to 1570, are now missing. The entries on the face of leaf one belong to 1571, and consist of christenings and burials only. The first wedding belongs to 1577, called Elizabethae decimo nono. There are no marriage entries in 1644-53, when this first volume breaks off; christenings and burials continue to be recorded.
Under date 1601 is a statement, with a boldly written signature below it: “ ………… Extd apud Stamford ... die Julii 1601 juxta mandatum gardianis de Broughton in ultima Visitatione Dni[Episcopi] de Lincoln per ... Willum Stirropp datum.” This appears to be the certificate of the accuracy of the transscripts. As W. Stirropp, whose similar certificate appears in several widely distant parish Registers, certifies this one at Stamford, and the writing in the various Registers differs decidedly it would seem that the various scribes brought their copies to him to be examined and certified (E. K. E.).
Volume II., from 1653 to 1683, containing thirteen leaves (parchment) whereof the seventh is mutilated and blank on its back, and the eighth is blank on most of its back. Leaf thirteen contains all the marriages. This volume has no covers. Leaf one (face) begins by stating that Thomas Burstall was sworn “Parish Register” of Nether Broughton before Willm Hartopp, January 17th, 1653.
From 1684 to 1706 inclusive, 23 years, the Register is missing.
Volume III., from 1707 to 1738-9, containing, within parchment covers, four paper leaves, fifteen parchment leaves, and a sixteenth mutilated and with writing upside down, ending with two more paper leaves, one mutilated.
One of the initial paper leaves is inscribed with names of some rectors, curates, and churchwardens ; Mr Robt. Harrison (rec.), John Voakes (cur. 1716) ; Mr Theoph. Burdett (rec.), John Pick (cur.), Chamberlain Atton (dir. 1719), John Cheselden (cur. 1721), Mr Charles Parice (cur. 1726). Another is inscribed with Latin Hexameter lines and English translations, on the uncertainty of Life, and on Living well from Juvenal ix. 126 and Horace Epist. i. 1-59 ; also an Elegiac Couplet on the raising of Lazarus. In one instance “Emmanuel College” is subjoined to Mr Voakes’s name.
Volume IV., marriages 1739 to 1753 ; baptisms and burials from 1739 to 1812. Bound in calf. Good condition.
