Nichols, in his History of Leicestershire, says of Eaton: “The Register begins in 1591 and is very imperfect. Unfortunately this earlier volume disappeared between the time when Nichols compiled his History and the making of the Parliamentary Return of 1831, when the earliest register at Eaton is stated to begin in 1724. This volume is still extant, being the earliest of the two volumes which are all that remain of the Eaton Registers prior to 1813. To some extent, however, the contents of the lost volume are recoverable from the Bishop’s Transcripts, which exist at Lincoln for the years 1604, 1606 to 1609, and 1618; and at Leicester for 1582 (nine years before the Register began in Nichol’s time, if the date he gives is correct) 1613, 1617, 1621, 1622, 1625 to 1629, 1632 to 1634, 1636 to 1638, 1660 to 1666, 1670 to 1672, 1674 to 1683, 1686 to 1688, 1690 to 1692, 1695 to 1700, and for most of the subsequent years.
Volume I. consists of 16 leaves of parchment, 14 measuring 14 ins. by 7¾ ins., and the last two being cut some inches shorter. The last page is blank. The volume is bound in paper boards and contains entries of Marriages from 1724 to 1752, with a few in 1774-5 and 1786, and Baptisms and Burials from 1724 to 1788.
Volume II., a folio book of printed forms on paper leaves contains entries of Marriages from 1755 to 1812. It is in a binding of rough calf, but the leaves have become loose and are in danger of being lost unless the volume is re-bound.
Volume III. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
A volume containing Baptisms and Burials from 1788 to 1812, though extant at the time of the Parliamentary Return of 1831 has since disappeared, so that two out of the first four volumes of the parish registers of Eaton are now lost.

Phillimore's Marriages - Croxton Kerrial 1558 to 1837
The following is a description of the earlier volumes of the Croxton Kerrial Register :—
This Register now consists of two volumes of Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages, which have been re-bound recently, and the first arranged in an order little short of extraordinary. There is a third volume in the original leather, containing Marriages entered upon the authorised forms.
Volume I. consists of two parts:
a) Twenty-three sheets of parchment, measuring on an average 10¼ by 5¾ inches. The sheets are, for the most part, arranged without any regard for chronology. The Marriages begin in 1558 and end in 1664. The Burials begin in 1559 and end in 1664. The Baptisms begin in 1620 and end in 1664, but there are one or two additions up to the year 1669. For the most part the entries are well written and in good condition.
(b) Twenty and a-half sheets of parchment, measuring 11½ by 7 inches, and containing entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1761 to 1808. A Marriage entry occurs very occasionally.
Volume II. consists of twenty-four sheets of parchment, measuring 10 5/8 by 8 inches, and contains entries of Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages, from 1670 to 1761. For the most part the entries are made in double columns.
Volume III. contains the Marriages from 1754 to 1812, entered on the authorised forms.
Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
It is worth while to note the paragraph occurring in Nichols Leicestershire, under the heading Croxton (Kerrial):-
“The Register begins in 1621, but with Baptisms only, no Burials occurring till 1670.”
Croxton owes the name Kerrial (it is thus distinguished from South Croxton) to a family de Cryol, who became possessed of the manor on April 26th, 1242. They held large possessions in Kent, and bore for their arms, Or, two chevronels and a canton, gules. In 1162, the Premonstratensian Priory of Newhouse founded a house at Croxton, which became an important Abbey. It was the Abbot of Croxton, who was acting as King John’s physician, when that monarch died at Newark. He superintended the embalming of the body, and carried away the bowels and buried them in his Abbey Church.

We, Richard Rose & Edwd Lee, of the Parish of Croxton Kerrial, in the County of Leicester, having entered by force into the Church of the said Parish, on Shrove Tuesday, out of Wantoness, whereby we make ourselves liable to a severe fine & censure from the Ecclesiastical Court, & for which offence we have been threatened by the Revd Thos Erskine the Curate, to be presented at the ensuing Visitation, to answer for the said offence, are sincerely sorry for what we have done. And we do acknowledge that we deserve punishment, and are very grateful to Mr Erskine for his kindness, who has consented to forgive us, on condition, that we promise never to offend again in like manner, and on our thus asking his forgiveness, and signing this paper, that we acted in a very wrong and improper manner.

This Register now consists of two volumes of Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages, which have been re-bound recently, and the first arranged in an order little short of extraordinary. There is a third volume in the original leather, containing Marriages entered upon the authorised forms.
Volume I. consists of two parts:
a) Twenty-three sheets of parchment, measuring on an average 10¼ by 5¾ inches. The sheets are, for the most part, arranged without any regard for chronology. The Marriages begin in 1558 and end in 1664. The Burials begin in 1559 and end in 1664. The Baptisms begin in 1620 and end in 1664, but there are one or two additions up to the year 1669. For the most part the entries are well written and in good condition.
(b) Twenty and a-half sheets of parchment, measuring 11½ by 7 inches, and containing entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1761 to 1808. A Marriage entry occurs very occasionally.
Volume II. consists of twenty-four sheets of parchment, measuring 10 5/8 by 8 inches, and contains entries of Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages, from 1670 to 1761. For the most part the entries are made in double columns.
Volume III. contains the Marriages from 1754 to 1812, entered on the authorised forms.
Volume IV. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
It is worth while to note the paragraph occurring in Nichols Leicestershire, under the heading Croxton (Kerrial):-
“The Register begins in 1621, but with Baptisms only, no Burials occurring till 1670.”
Croxton owes the name Kerrial (it is thus distinguished from South Croxton) to a family de Cryol, who became possessed of the manor on April 26th, 1242. They held large possessions in Kent, and bore for their arms, Or, two chevronels and a canton, gules. In 1162, the Premonstratensian Priory of Newhouse founded a house at Croxton, which became an important Abbey. It was the Abbot of Croxton, who was acting as King John’s physician, when that monarch died at Newark. He superintended the embalming of the body, and carried away the bowels and buried them in his Abbey Church.

Phillimore's Marriages - Branston 1591 to 1839
These marriages are contained in four volumes, as follows:-
Volume I. consists of thirty-nine parchment leaves, measuring 14¼ by 5½ inches, stitched into a limp parchment cover. Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages are not kept separately, and the whole Volume covers the years 1591 to 1731 inclusive.
Volume II., bound in half-calf, consists of thirty stout parchment leaves (several of them blank), measuring 13¼ by 7¾ inches, and contains Baptisms and Marriages from 1732 to 1812 inclusive, and Marriages from 1732 to 1752.
Volume III., the usual printed forms, on paper leaves, bound in rough calf, contains marriages from 1754 to 1812.
Volume IV., a similar book, bound in parchment boards, contains Marriages from 1813 to 1839.
Among the transcripts at Leicester Mr. Hartopp records one for the year 1578, anterior to the present register.
These Marriages have been copied by Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Blagg, and are now printed under their supervision by permission of the Rev. D. W. Peregrine, Rector of Branston.

Volume I. consists of thirty-nine parchment leaves, measuring 14¼ by 5½ inches, stitched into a limp parchment cover. Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages are not kept separately, and the whole Volume covers the years 1591 to 1731 inclusive.
Volume II., bound in half-calf, consists of thirty stout parchment leaves (several of them blank), measuring 13¼ by 7¾ inches, and contains Baptisms and Marriages from 1732 to 1812 inclusive, and Marriages from 1732 to 1752.
Volume III., the usual printed forms, on paper leaves, bound in rough calf, contains marriages from 1754 to 1812.
Volume IV., a similar book, bound in parchment boards, contains Marriages from 1813 to 1839.
Among the transcripts at Leicester Mr. Hartopp records one for the year 1578, anterior to the present register.

Phillimore's Marriages - Barkston 1569 to 1837
The first Volume of Barkston Registers consists of twenty six leaves of parchment measuring 14¾ by 5¾ inches, stitched in a parchment cover. The first page is headed “The Register booke of Barkston & A Cataloge of the names of those who have bene Maried Christened & Buried within the sayed Towne synce the yeare 1569.” The first entry is the burial of William Stevenson, Vicar, 22nd June, 1569. Down to 1599, the Volume is a transcript of an earlier book, probably on paper, now destroyed, made in accordance with the canon of 1597, by Philip Blagg, or Blague, the Vicar, and certified by him and the Churchwardens at the foot of each page. Philip Blagnes burial is recorded on 3oth June, 1621, and he was succeeded by John Clarke, who gave place to Stephen Dixon in 1646, and he to John Summerfeild in 1663. This Volume contains the entries of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1560 to 1682, complete and unbroken.
Volume II. consists of thirty five leaves of parchment measuring about 12¼ by 5¼ inches, stitched into old pasteboard covers. This Volume contains entries of Baptisums, Marriages, and Burials from 1683 to 1779 inclusive. On the third page, under the year 1699, occurs the following :-
“Ellen the daughter of Bryon and Ellen Dun w[a]s baptized April 23. Lord pardon me if I am guilty of any error in regestring Ellen Dun’s name.” Derham Hudleston appears to have been Vicar at this time, and the succeeding vicars recorded in this Volume are Edward Bacon, Richard Tresham, Everard Breton (or Bretton) and Richard Stoup, while Robert Gilbert, Anthony Thompson, and Michael Burn, are recorded as officiating at different periods as Curates. Richard Stomp also appears to have been a Curate—in—charge before succeeding to the living as Vicar. In the 18th century there are several memoranda, of the distribution of the “Poors Bibles,” four copies apparently being given away each year. The Marriages in this Volume between 1755 and 1779 are entered in duplicate with those in Volmue IV.
Volume III. consists of thirteen leaves of parchment, measuring 13½ by 7½ inches, in parchment boards, now broken, and requiring re-binding. It contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1780 to 1812 inclusive, and Marriages from 1780 to 1797, in duplicate with the entries in Volume IV. John Stoup Wagstaffe was vicar during most of this period.
Volume IV., of printed forms on large parchment leaves, bound in parchment boards, contains entries of Marriages from 1755 to 1804.
Volume V. contains only four large leaves of parchment (the leaves not required having been cut out) bound in rough calf, and bearing entries of Marriages from 1805 to 1812.
Volume VI. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
These Marriages have been transcribed by Mr. Thomas M. Blagg, and are now printed under his supervision, by permission of the Rev. John T. Bell, Vicar.

Volume II. consists of thirty five leaves of parchment measuring about 12¼ by 5¼ inches, stitched into old pasteboard covers. This Volume contains entries of Baptisums, Marriages, and Burials from 1683 to 1779 inclusive. On the third page, under the year 1699, occurs the following :-
“Ellen the daughter of Bryon and Ellen Dun w[a]s baptized April 23. Lord pardon me if I am guilty of any error in regestring Ellen Dun’s name.” Derham Hudleston appears to have been Vicar at this time, and the succeeding vicars recorded in this Volume are Edward Bacon, Richard Tresham, Everard Breton (or Bretton) and Richard Stoup, while Robert Gilbert, Anthony Thompson, and Michael Burn, are recorded as officiating at different periods as Curates. Richard Stomp also appears to have been a Curate—in—charge before succeeding to the living as Vicar. In the 18th century there are several memoranda, of the distribution of the “Poors Bibles,” four copies apparently being given away each year. The Marriages in this Volume between 1755 and 1779 are entered in duplicate with those in Volmue IV.
Volume III. consists of thirteen leaves of parchment, measuring 13½ by 7½ inches, in parchment boards, now broken, and requiring re-binding. It contains entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1780 to 1812 inclusive, and Marriages from 1780 to 1797, in duplicate with the entries in Volume IV. John Stoup Wagstaffe was vicar during most of this period.
Volume IV., of printed forms on large parchment leaves, bound in parchment boards, contains entries of Marriages from 1755 to 1804.
Volume V. contains only four large leaves of parchment (the leaves not required having been cut out) bound in rough calf, and bearing entries of Marriages from 1805 to 1812.
Volume VI. contains Marriages from 1813 to 1837.
These Marriages have been transcribed by Mr. Thomas M. Blagg, and are now printed under his supervision, by permission of the Rev. John T. Bell, Vicar.
